For some reason, I am having trouble deleting a small section of an audio clip. In fact, I CAN delete a piano audio clip, but just cannot do the same to the audio voice clip below that. The only difference in the tracks is that the voice has 2 audio effects. Is it possible that a track with audio effects does not lend itself to that. I can't even use the split tool on either side of where I want to delete, so that I could then delete the middle. I hit delete and no line appears. Again, I am able to split and, as I said, can put splits in the piano audio track in the same song.

If it is a Region FX clip it may not be split
Refer to restrictions on Region FX clips at the bottom of this page.

Also if there was automation you cannot split clip. You don't need to split the track to use Melodyn on small segments. 
If you are working with Melodyn many find it easier to highlight the part that needs correction with a mouse drag. Working in small little bits is easier if done before other processing is applied the the track. Once your done with Melodyn bounce that track to a new track to get rid of the regional effects and carry on. 
Opening a whole track in Melodyn has been know to cause issues and even crashes. It also can make those project's slow to open.

Re: the last one, are you saying that even now, I could "bounce" the track that I have already used with Melodyne to another track---and then I would be able to do things like delete small phrases with the erase tool, and/or set up splits? ANd, if so, by "bounce," do you mean just copy and paste to another track, or clone the track or something else? Or even highlight the whole track and drag it to a free audio track. I would think the "Region Fx" attributes would come along with the "bounce."

Render it.
Some people don't like to render their ARA/Region FX because they want to have the original incase they want to go back to the start. But personally myself, if it needed to be fixed, then why would I want the original ?
But you can clone the track so you'll have a back up.
 
I've never had Melodyne crash on me and I use it vigorously on every project.
What I have had happen is.. I've had Region FX tracks that I have not rendered (I let them pile up) they caused instability.
After im done using Melodyne, Drum Replacer or Vocal synch I always Right click on the Region FX clip portion and choose "Bounce to clips". Now the clip can be edited, split, copy, pasted, what ever.
You can alternatively: Right-click a Region FX clip and choose Region FX > Melodyne > Render Region FX from the Clips pane pop-up menu.

I DID perform the  "Bounce to clips" function on my clip. I was able to then manipulate the clip as I had wanted, such as erasing small parts and putting in splits.
I guess the "bounce to clips" command is just another way of taking the clip out of Melodyne edit mode and putting back to a "regular" clip. I also assume that when I DO "bounce to clips," my changes are saved in the new version of the clip.

That is correct.
 
I don't split clips when I use Melodyne. I do the drag/sweep/select maneuver.
