I had the original Music Creator. Last week I bought Music Creator 6 to try and get back into writing music.

It took forever to find but I located the Staff View. I don't use a keyboard to import anything. I write all my music by assigning instruments, then draw notes to the staff. It's the very old fashioned way but that's how I do it.

My problem is when I put notes to the staff only about 1/4 of them are making sounds. Today I placed 12 quarter notes in the piano area, and when I hit play only 3 or 4 of them made sounds.

I guess what I'm looking for is a simple tutorial that would explain how to write music the way I write it.

Thanks.

Dropped MIDI notes are usually an indication of too small a "Prepare Using nnn Millisecond Buffers" setting in Preferences > MIDI > Playback and Recording. Try increasing the setting from 250 to 500 or 750.

You could also have notes overlapping regarding their on/off start/end time. If the synth is a mono synth it will have to drop something.

Each note should stop before another starts.  I had to correct a wrong note using staff.... it played fine before I corrected it but after correcting it, the second note didn't play. I finally figured out that in the edit, I had inadvertently  overlapped the notes by a few milliseconds. Once I fixed that, the second note played correctly.

With a poly synth, this is usually not an issue unless the 2 notes in question are the same pitch.

When I changed the buffer to 500 from 250 I heard every note I'd put down, where before I couldn't, so I'm pretty sure that took care of it. After messing around a little more, some things are coming back to me from before, so I think I'll be able to get this to work for me after all. Yesterday I wanted to throw it into the river.

I'll be sure to come back as more questions arise...

Thanks for the help. I really enjoyed this a decade or more ago and would like to again!

Glad it worked for you. A few years ago, Cakewalk changed the default from 500 to 250. It has caused quite a few threads like this one.

I will mark this solved. Thanks for the feedback.
