DVI output to VGA input is pretty cheap.

VGA output to DVI input (or HDMI input) is a bit more expensive.

I got one for around £50 - it also takes composite video and converts it to DVI / HDMI.

The quality is not good. Usable for movies, but pretty bad for computer desktops / consoles.

IMHO getting a monitor that has both DVI and VGA input is a better (and maybe cheaper) approach.

Make sure you understand what you are getting. These adapters are often not bidirectional, because some electronic logic has to be applied going from analog computer output to digital monitor input. That is also a reason for the price difference between a simple adapter and an adapter box.

An explanation for why some adapters will work and others will not.

Cable Matters makes good cables like what you're looking for. I have one of their VGA to HDMI converters. Nice piece of business, there.
