I hope that makes the price drop for i7-77XX for my next build!

I doubt this is a recent plan, nor is it in immediate response to AMD. It takes years to develop a new CPU, even one extrapolated from existing designs. My guess is Intel has been sitting on this for a while, milking the i7 until competitive pressures force them to release the new one. That's how the industry has always worked, even before Intel and AMD existed: advances are held back until needed, even if it means temporarily downgrading a design to intentionally throttle it so it's just a little better than the competition, but no more. 
 
Good news is it will knock prices down on i7s. However, we can probably expect the sudden appearance of a higher-end version of the i7. It'll be priced and spec'd midway between Ryzen 7 and the i9. And unless your piggy bank is overflowing, that's the one that'll be in your next build, not the i9.
 
For myself, I have yet to push my i7 DAW to its limits. I'll be buying more SSDs, but for CPU I'm pretty much set for years to come.

After reading Jim's reviews of Ryzen I haven't felt as if Intel was ever seriously challenged for DAW work.
 
I don't see huge studios making movie productions going out and all buying Ryzen.
AMD deserves credit where credit is due, still, there are issues here and there with hardware.
I'll take reliable over a few ticks in performance any day. Said performance being subjective to the type of test.
Hardware is still catching up. Ryzen got off to a bumpy start. AMD 3rd party mobo makers seem to be coming along now. I wouldn't bet the house on it. 
 
For us it isn't a simple as changing socks. If I have all my software, samples, etc. loaded up on a machine I don't want any problems.
 

I've got a Ryzen 1800x based DAW running here in the studio.
For Ryzen to run at full potential (especially with low-latency audio), you need fast RAM.
It was a MAJOR quest to find a combination of motherboard/RAM... where the RAM would actually run at 3200MHz.
By contrast, install DDR4/3200 into a X99 or Z270 motherboard... and in most cases it'll work at full speed.
The ironic twist, with current Intel architecture... there's not a huge benefit to using DDR4/3200.  
 
The Ryzen platform is slowly coming together... but it's still far too flaky for us to consider building for clients.

Yep as he mentioned Ryzen is working very well with fast ram. But the problem is with the other components / motherboards still not being up to scratch for Ryzen platforms.
 
Like I only buy high end motherboards and PSUs as those are the backbone of all computers, and the main motherboard companies have been going all out with excessively high end designs for Intel for a long time as it was the platform of choice for performance for so long.
 
First thing for me to consider AMD would be to have an equivilent Asus Rampage series motherboard, I havnt even checked yet as I wont need to change sockets for a long time, but once I started getting such motherboards I couldnt go back to low end ones. 
 
Also Intel putting out 12 core CPUs doesnt challenge Ryzen at all if the prices are still going to be too high. The sweet spot for an 1800x is if you can find one for $100 less than a 6850k, Intels 12 core CPU when if does come out is probably gonna cost 2 grand, not under £500.

I think even in the Opteron range by AMD, Intel excel alas not by much. The benefits to the average musician, producer or engineer wouldn't really count or be noticeable unless the work was highly multi-threaded, very calculation intensive and having the lowest latency was not a priority.
