  • I've got some good song ideas, but drums/beats are my weakness, any ideas ... ?

I've got some good melody ideas and can do bass lines and lyrics etc.  But I am not good with drums.  This is holding me back from making songs.
Is there anything out there that can help me?  Maybe a VST that has got lots of inbuilt ready-made beats I can just drop in?
I'm not focused on just one genre, but would like to experiment with a few genres (but I tend to gravitate towards EDM and more modern stuff as opposed to classic rock).

There are a lot of MIDI drum loops that can give you either an idea of what you want, or the actual pattern that fits your song completely.

I see that you've got Sonar Home 6XL.  If that's the old version that I think it is, it might be time to upgrade.  You can buy a drum VST (I have Addictive Drums and Superior Drummer, EZDrummer is another good one), but for the price you'll pay it might be worth just upgrading to a newer version of Sonar.  Sonar Producer & Platinum (and others perhaps) come with Addictive Drums as part of the package.

if you do have a drum VST, there are lots of websites that sell loops (there have been a few mentioned in the Software Forum threads).

I see you have SHS6XL - that came with Session Drummer 2 didn't it? If you upgraded to Sonar Professional you'd get Addictive Drums which (IMO) is an improvement over SD2. I'm finding it quite easy to build up drum tracks.

Rayzoon's Jamstix is worth a look for creating pretty realistic drum parts. It has a steep learning curve but can generate very 'real' sounding drums.

I never used Session Drummer 2, but didn't it come with MIDI sequences?
