TASCAM us 20x20 is a good middle-weight contender.  10 X in and out (w/ 8 pres) + midi + digital, so it has most bases covered there.  Good sound.  Nice latency via USB 3.  All the US-series share the same drivers, so they are likely to be kept up to date.  $400.  Not likely to outgrow it for the price.

i use an RME Babyface Pro....

really like it.

it has a midi breakout cable, quite stout....
all depends on how many preamps you need.

I had a very bad time with the unusable M-Audio M-Track Quad, then bought a Behringer U-Phoria UMC-404HD. It has 4 x mic/line/instrument inputs and handles Midi in/out via a USB connection to your computer.

In Windows 10, Sonar Platinum, I've recorded many recordings of 4 simultaneous 24-bit/48kHz inputs without a single glitch. (Interestingly, it works fine using WASAPI for 16-bit, but I had to switch to WDM/KS mode for 24-bit mode ...) Last night I installed Presonus Studio One demo and tested recording, and again was able to record 4 simultaneous 24-bit/48kHz inputs without a glitch.

So I highly recommend the Behringer! It's very affordable as well ... just $100.

I've used many interfaces over the years, most of them quite good. But I've recently moved to RME and I'll never look back. Best drivers in the business, IMHO, and great sounding hardware. If you can't afford their entry-level stuff, you can find used original Babyface units for pretty good prices. They work great, are durable, and RME strongly supports their older hardware.

You don't mention your budget, which for most people is a big factor.

That is why you are getting suggestions that are all over the map cost-wise.  Provide your budget, and that narrows down the field considerably.

You may have also heard that Sonar is no longer in development... Something to think about as you shop for a new interface.

Hi, My old cakewalk UA-25EX has died due to windows 10 and drivers

My UA-25EX works fine with Win 10, drivers automatically downloaded when I plugged the interface in.

I have over the years accumulated an Edirol UA-25EX, UA-101, Roland OctaCapture, QuadCapture, DuoCapture EXII, PreSonus, Tascam US1641, 1800, 16x08, 20x20, 2x2 and 1x2.

Edirols are great but there are better pres around in newer gear. The 101 still serves as an interface for all my rack gear.

I much prefer the new Tascams. Super low noise pres, no issues when connecting to other gear and low digital ground loop noise. I have always found Tascam quoted specs to be very conservative.

Earlier drivers had latency issues but all that is fixed now. In general I have the impression Tascam releases the product before the drivers are ready, which damages their reputation unnecessarily.

The Rolands are all microphonic when you tap them. The QuadCapture has a low hum on the instrument input which becomes audible when the track is compressed. The auto level setting concept doesn't work for me and the OctaCapture has especially high digital ground loop issues and has, perhaps for that reason, only 50dB gain max, but I use them for drums anyway (two can be used together). On the other hand, they all have drivers that work with XP, so I keep them for my mobile rig which is still XP.

The Presonus drivers have issues with some of my audio programs and it shows a silly icon whether I am using it or not. After a second version was released with other issues (and no development done anymore), my Presonus now resides in my dud gear box. My first and last Presonus.
