I have an opportunity to buy a used VS-700 C with what I believe is a 700R (rack mount portion?) I'm wondering if it's worth my while. I currently am quite happy with a Roland Octa-Capture, but I might be able to snag this for a good price. It's in good shape and the guy just wants me to make an offer. I was thinking around $1000 was a good deal, what do you guys think? I remember looking at these when they came out but, I have no experience with them. I saw a thread with windows 8.1 issues, is this still a problem? I was thinking of going to windows 10 this year and I don't need driver headaches! Thanks for any input. 

I've already contacted Roland about drivers for Win 10 and they told me they are on the way and they're just waiting on Roland JP to send them over. They expect it will be when the final release candidate comes out so no worries there.
 
I'll admit I've been looking at other options as far as an interface and controller go but the reality I've come to is that unless I'm going with a larger format controller, there is no need to upgrade because the VS-700c works beautifully. I'm only hoping that the software for it goes open source (I think it has already if I'm not mistaken) and that users who program continue to develop it to work with new versions of Sonar as they come out to take advantage of the changes.
 
Interface wise, I will likely upgrade but keep the 700r as a backup. It's not by any means a bad interface but I'd like to either get an Orion or a UAD interface if the new Intel boards running Skylake have good support for Thunderbolt on PC finally.

I agree 100% ... VS-700C is still top, VS-700R might be replaced sometime with RME, UA, Lynx, but currently works beautifully also when linked with the Octa-Capture (VS EXPAND). That's why I think I won't be replacing anytime soon ... BTW, a grand for the set is definitely a good deal ...

No issues currently. I use both a VS-100 and VS-700 and both work just fine.
 
If the set you're looking at is in good condition, I'd grab it. If I sell mine, I'd likely be asking between $2000 - $2700 because they are practically in mint condition with all the original boxes and such sans 8.5 code.

Can't really remember when the vs-700 started functioning properly again ... sometime in between X1d and X2a ??? it's been too long with too many versions in between ...
 
Anyway, I used X3e + vs-700 happily for a long and stable period and see similar stability plus some really nice new features with Platinum (mix recall, vocal sync, drum replacer, ...) so there's no real point in sticking with X2 IMHO

I don't like yesterdays tech.  If you have 1000 dollars , I would upgrade your setup in other ways.  Sonar platinum is a must for one.  Getting a new mic, getting a new interface.  Try to spend money or time using and learning the newest tools.  The opportunity cost of investing in a vs 700 would be a deal breaker for me.  The melodyne integration and upgrades of platinum alone is going to professionalize your workflow more than the vs 700 I would think. 

As a Control Surface VS-700 C is still the only one with relatively up to date Sonar support. There is no sign that will be changed any time soon. That can be changed only in case CW has an interest, and that in case is possible in case Tascam produce some kind of VS-700 replacement. In the latest questionnaire CW has asked about iPad/Android app only, but not about new HW device.
 
Closest "concurrent" is MCU Pro. But its support in Sonar is frozen many years ago, before X versions.

You are confusing totally different things here: melodyne and Platinum features are software, while a control surface like the vs-700 is one way (better: the most natural way) to drive the software ... despite the vs-700 being a few years old, there is nothing that gets anywhere close in terms of integration with Sonar ... and unfortunately it may stay like this for a while because there is not much happening in the controller hardware market ...

I'm okay with this. I get annoyed when companies put out a new model every other year and then slowly (or quickly in some cases) drop support for older but otherwise perfectly good hardware just because they brought something new out in order to keep pushing surge sales.
