Greetings. Looking for a little help with MC6. I want to loop record from a microphone and be able to hear all the prior just-recorded loops while I'm adding each new loop. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks a lot for any help.

First, go to Preferences ("P" shortcut on your keyboard, or EDIT>PREFERENCES) then go to Project>Record and change the Recording Mode to Sound on Sound (default is Comping).

this will allow you to hear the previously recorded track when recording on the same track again.

now to loop record, use your mouse to left click drag an area on the timeline where you want to loop.  then on the Control Bar, just to the left of the TIME display is an icon which looks like two arrows making a circle.  that's the loop button.  the one below it is the icon of the button to set the time for the loop.  however, if you've already marked the timeline like I said above, clicking on the loop button will automatically set the loop time to what you've marked.

then arm the track and it will loop and record.

Thanks so much for your reply. I think I didn't explain my question well because I wasn't clear with my terminology between takes and tracks. Let me try again.

I can do the loop recording as you described to record multiple, repeated takes. I'd like to do the loop recording as you describe, but be able to hear each previous take as I'm doing the loop recording. I want to be able to loop record multiple takes and hear all previous takes of that loop during recording. When I do what you describe, I can hear the previously recorded tracks as I'm loop recording, but I can't hear the previous takes of the loop recording that I'm doing. Does that make sense?

Thanks again. You were very helpful, but I didn't ask the question very well the first time.

Hi,
I understood what you meant, but maybe my solution didn't work?  the first part is supposed to be the part that solves your problem.  the part of changing the RECORDING MODE to SOUND ON SOUND should allow you to hear the previous takes as you record the current one.

if it doesn't, there must be something else wrong with your settings.

Drat. Any idea what the other settings might be? Thanks.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you.

I've just done an experiment on MC7 and that's exactly how it works, I can't find any other settings which would cause your previous takes not to be heard during loop recording if you have the Sound on Sound selected.

if it's set to Comping (default) then it will mute the previously recorded tracks and if it's set to Overwrite, then it deletes the previously recorded tracks on the loop.

Thanks. Looks like it was added in MC7, best I can tell from the website. I don't have an option for "Comping", only Overwrite and Sound on Sound, and apparently the Sound on Sound in MC6 is the same as Comping in MC7, and there's no equivalent in MC6 to the Sound on Sound in MC7. Looks like I'll have to upgrade to MC7 if I really want to do it. Thanks so much for your help!
