  • Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 and Windows 10 ~ Keep the Gen 1, or move up to Gen 2?

After many years of tinkering with my home studio in various temporary locations (and with much of my gear stored away in boxes), I'm finally in the process of putting together my permanent home hobby studio. One of the boxed items I'll be unpacking (and actually still NIB) is a Gen 1 Focusrite Scarlett 18i20.

I plan to be running Windows 10 on all my computers for the foreseeable future. Now that the dust has settled somewhat (hopefully!) with Windows 10, Sonar, and driver issues with various "legacy" equipment, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on their experience with the Gen 1 Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 running under Windows 10, and if it would be worth it to move up to the Gen 2 Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (or other similarly-priced USB interface with similar I/O capabilities).

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I had three Gen 1 units. When the Gen 2 versions were released I decided to sell my Gen 1s and then upgrade to the Gen 2 units.

I was easily able to get to get buyers of my used Gen 1 units, which helped to some degree to offset the new purchase.

The net effect of that effort is "Wow!, so glad I did that. Huge improvement!"

So that's one input for you.

What Roger said. It's good to unload gear before it becomes outdated which can happen real fast.
You put it on E bay or Craigs List and you really don't have to even mention 1st Gen. That's up to the buyer to ask.. most won't know or care about the differance, they are only shopping price, not features.

The other thing to think about is if you plan on recording larger groups then the extra channels might be worth keeping around..

Appreciate your feedback guys!
Gen 2 is the direction I was already (sort of) leaning towards ~
after my mixed-success debacle of trying to get some of my legacy Roland gear working under Windows 10, I've been a bit leery of trying to implement any gear that hasn't been updated with current Windows 10 drivers.
Guess I need to start a conversation with Uncle Sweetwater!

So -
Anyone interested in a good price on a NIB 1st Gen Focusrite 18i20?

I have that same interface (gen 1) and it works just fine under Win10.

Ya, Unlike Roland, Focusrite are one of the good companies and seem to keep their drivers up to date, I have the 6i6 1st gen and it's rock solid. Only thing with the 2nd Gen is they say they get better RTL performance.. It's probaby not enough to make a differance to me because I don't have a situation that requires low RTL like guitar sims. So I'm keeping mine until I make the move to a RME or Motu.

Byron, which drivers are you sing with your 18i20?
Guess it can't hurt to take it for a spin before I commit to an upgrade.

Thanks!

I have both the 1st and 2nd generation of the 18i20 (different computers) and really don't notice a performance difference because I'm not doing live recordings.  The meters are nicer in the 2nd gen and the gain controls seem to have more sensitivity.  The software may be a bit more intimidating in the 2nd gen unit.  Both are stable in Windows 10.

Riojazz -
Which Gen 1 drivers did you wind up using for your 18i20 under WIndows 10?

Thanks!

Whatever is standard.  I tried their beta drivers and had clicks and pops, so they helped me uninstall everything and reload using the regular driver.  I think it's 1.8?
