I saw this comment on PreSonus' site and have DL'ed the demo. I've set up Kontakt 5 with eight instruments and about six other instruments besides (including Diva which can get somewhat processor heavy). This is hardly the heaviest arrangement I've set up, but I think it should address the poster's concern. I haven't seen any behavior like what the OP is talking about. I can't speak, per se, to the efficiency question in a technical sense; I'm just not capable of ascertaining that.
 
Maybe this is a problem more specific to his computer. However, my computer would have to be considered relatively modest: i7 2600K (quad core), OC'ed to 4.5 GHz, Win10 Pro 64 bit, 16 GB RAM, no SSD's. This is an old computer at this point, I'm thinking 6-7 years old. 
 
BTW, I'm probably switching over to Studio One on Monday. It seems to do what I need it to do. I tend to use lots of Vst's (and I almost always run Kontakt) and do relatively little recording.

As you may sense, so far, I've enjoyed my time in Studio One. It seems really solid. One huge plus is the latency is ridiculously low for me (again, I wonder about the OP's comment based on this). Definitely try the demo if you haven't already.

I am looking at MixCraft today. 14 days free, costs $99.00, It looks like a scaled down version of Sonar!
I would say it IS Sonar!!! ;) if I didn't know better... 

I'm not an advanced user of S1, but for a couple days of getting to know this daw I've seen clicks that disappeared after changing the asio buffer, and strange behavior when midi editing (for example, click+shift works well only if you press shift after clicking. if you press the first one, the note will not be set.), and a constant cursor lag after clicking into the working field, in Sonar it happens instantly. Add here a huge number of interface elements, from which it is dazzling in the eyes and the impossibility of changing the appearance... 
Not all of this relates directly to performance, but is directly related to the performance efficiency in comparison with the Sonar. By many factors this gives way to Sonar. And who only says that they are very similar? These are two different universes.
Whatever your choice, I strongly recommend that you pre-test the demo version.

I just purchased S One 3 Pro on the Black Friday discount at Sweetwater.  It has its learning curve and will take me a while to get the hang of it.  Sonar does what I need to do but at some point a Windows update will "break it" and it will be done for.  How far down the road?? but it gives me time to learn Studio One 3.

Your perception of similarity is going to depend largely on how you used Sonar; this is not to say that your opinion (or mine) is "subjective", but it is based on your personal need, work style, and what you tended to use/do in your current/previous DAW. I tend to think that Studio One is fairly similar; I think Bitflipper said he feels that it is the closest thing to Sonar (I'm not sure I'd go that far). You think it's another universe. There's not a right or wrong in this, just an opinion, valid for the individual, and largely contingent on past experience. 
 
Your demo recommendation is the only safe way to go. Amen to that.

You're welcome. This has been an interesting time for all of us here I think. I do pray that Noel and the Bakers all land squarely on their feet, hopefully in a fulfilling job with another music software developer so that their expertise in the field is not disregarded.
 
As far as the Studio One crossgrade price is concerned, I wish they'd release it on Monday. That was we could compare the half-price Black Friday Sale price and the crossgrade price and make an informed decision. I tried to order Studio One yesterday, but my salesman at Sweetwater and I missed each other somehow. I'm debating aiting until Tuesday, but $225 for Studio One and Notion combined is pretty scary (and I don't know that Notion will be part of any crossgrade price anyway).
 
$149 was quoted at one point for the crossgrade price, but no one seems to know from where that price originated.
