Ryzen is here. AMD said Wednesday that it plans a “hard launch” of its first three Ryzen processors on March 2, outperforming Intel’s high-end chips while undercutting its prices by as much as 54 percent.

AMD executives confidently unveiled the first three desktop chips to attack Intel’s Core i7, supported by several top-tier motherboard vendors and boutique system builders. In many cases, executives said, AMD will offer more for less. The top-tier Ryzen 7 1800X will cost less than half of what Intel’s thousand-dollar Core i7-6900K chip does—and outperform it, too. You can preorder Ryzen chips and systems from 180 retailers and system integrators today.

I was about to pull the trigger on a new DAW build using the i7-7700k. Now I wonder if I should consider Ryzen. Any thoughts on how Ryzen might perform in a DAW environment?

I do hope it lives up to the hype and works on the DAW side of things.  Competition is what the CPU space needs.

All I'm hoping is that I can get a used i7 cheap now!

I've pre-ordered an 1800X and motherboard (and all the other components I need) for a new DAW build.  I'll be reporting on it's suitability as a Sonar-based DAW as soon as I get it built.

I hate to be doubter but AMD has touted "better than Intel" before and never delivered.

The reviews of this are definitely something to keep an eye on. The high-end ASUS MB for the 1800X is $250, so some real world builds will be interesting to see results from.

can't recall the source,  but when i was reading about the comparison stats, intel had better hyperthreading and other features. i switched to amd a long time ago for a few years, then came back to intel.  even tho some speeds and benchmarks may be close to each other, imo the intel has the edge on amd, but I can't say exactly why.  it just seems to run smoother.
