You do realize that you can unplug the network to avoid all updates, and the computer will continue to run as is.

That's what i've been doing, for the last 8 years!!!

using sonar 6 PE, on a dialed in Win XP system......
has worked perfectly.

i was going to pull the trigger on a new PC for a new DAW on DEC 1st, that's been in the books for almost a year.....

then this!!!

there's only a small number of the plugs bundled with sonar that won't work in other daws, someone posted a checklist/screenshot in another thread already

The ones that quickly come to mind are the plugins bundled as a Cakewalk version from AAS, Nomad Factory, and Overloud.

Celemony Melodyne and XLN Addictive drums should be fine, as they are activated directly with an account that you redeem on their websites.

The Cakewalk instruments all seem to be portable.  As far as the Cakewalk effects go, I guess the Pro Channel is the biggest loss.  And oddly enough, the Adaptive Limiter seems to only be licensed for use in Sonar.  But the new LP-EQ and LP-MB seem to work fine elsewhere.

I jumped onto this one cause as a professional I need a reliable DAW
that I know and use with ease.
but, boys: when I need lager live rooms and more than 4 mics  i go to a certain commercial / small & cheap studio around that has sonar installed and working.
Believe it or not, they run on Sonar 6, still working on a Win7 x64 machine (no internet so no updates)
They just use it as an audio recorder so no need for more advanced stuff etc (I agree that going there is really awkward for me, like going to Jurassic studio) but let's face it: the software works rock steady, they never had an issue.
Sonar 6 was installed on a Win98 PC, then on a new XP PC and now on this one (5 y/o Win7 PC) Always rock solid.

So we'll talk about a replacement for PLAT around 2028 if you don't mind.

OTOH, I am still using Adobe Audition 3, which stopped development in 2007, as well as software development tools that date back to the 90's.

And it's cool to be okay with working with the continued risk that one day it will just stop working. While I'm now on Mac, I had this happen with Bias Peak Pro 6. It worked for about 6 years and then just stopped after an OS update. Now it crashes upon boot up every single time and Bias has long since closed its doors. But it's less of an issue when an audio editor stops working but much more of an issue if it's your DAW that suddenly breaks.

Perhaps Sonar will work for a very long time... perhaps it wont. It's up to each user to decide if that's a risk they're willing to take or if they want to move over to another active DAW developer.

Good to know about the limited midi in S1. That may be a deal breaker for me. I need to research further I guess but Cubase may be the next contender to be considered.

Does any of the current DAWs support anything like CAL scripts?

what about pro tools or logic pro or ableton live?

PT is what I went to after leaving Sonar. A bit of a steep learning curve and not everything you know in Sonar translates over but may well be worth it. Check out Avid.com and the DUC which is the PT forum of choice. Be aware PT uses an iLok dongle.

Which PT if I may ask? I was there this morning looking at PT 12 I believe.
I hate to spend money but need to get something.

*I really don't want to spend extra money now...second grandchild is on the way!!! 😊

I'm running PT11.3.2; PT12.8.2 is the latest version. Depending on what plan you get you can get one that has a combo license asset for PT10/11/12 or just PT12. You'll have to check the Avid site to see which is which.

I spent a solid year putting Reaper, Studio One, Cubase and Digital Performer through their paces. If you want extended MIDI, I'd go with Cubase Pro. To me, it's what my favorite version of Sonar, 8.5.3, should have evolved into. It has the Logical Editor, which is actually more powerful than CAL. I just build presets for the LE when I need something, and soon enough I had a full library of functions.

How would one import their sonar bundles into Cubase Pro?  First unbundle and save as projects?  Then load those projects into Cubase Pro?  Or something else?  How does it work?
THANKS,
