I want to build a cheap daw.  would like it to stay under 350.  I have a ss drive already and a copy of Win 7. I have been looking at
some amd cpu bundles (cpu and motherboard combo).  does anyone have any feedback?  It would be greatly appreciated
 

I don't think that for $350 you'll come anywhere close to what you already have. (Looks like your existing system is pretty nice. Certainly way better than mine.) If you're looking to build a computer for someone else, I would recommend buying a used computer on eBay rather than individual parts. I suspect that buying piece by piece (RAM, power supply, motherboard, CPU, CPU Fan, GPU, etc.) will be much more expensive than buying everything together. An i7 CPU by itself is more than $300 if purchased new and around $200 if purchased used so don't expect much for $350 - even if you buy used.
 
I'm using a computer with an older Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz CPU and it seems to work fine. You can buy used computers with that CPU for much less than a newer i3/i5/i7 CPU. I haven't got any performance complaints, but my songs don't use a ton of plug-in synths.

What do you need to buy exactly?  Typically you can save money especially if you look for deals.
 
You could probably get a decent MB, CPU and RAM for $350 if you already had everything else.

I am not looking to match my current system.  just something that will give me decent performance for tracking

You are going to really struggle to get something under $350.  Power supply and case will run you at least $100 on their own (if you are lucky.)  The processor and mb are likely going to be almost $200 (and that's for an i3.)  That only leaves $50 for memory, harddrive and DVD.

If you need all that, you're going to need to buy used and you're probably also going to have to buy a complete system. I can't imagine buying all those parts - even used - and stay under $350. However, there are plenty of used systems available on eBay for less than $350 if you're willing to go Core 2 Duo. I just looked and you can buy a complete, working, system for under $150. You'd need to add more RAM but you will have plenty of money left over to buy that. I also looked at intel i3 systems and it appears that you'll spend around $300 just for a case, power supply, motherboard and CPU. Leaving a DVD drive, HD, and RAM. That would be way over budget. Maybe some searching will find better deals but I doubt you'll stay under $350 for everything that's needed.
 
If you decide to buy an older core 2 duo system make sure the motherboard will accept 8 gig of RAM.

You would have to go the AMD route.  An AMD FX6300 and board are under $200.

He needs to get the mb/processor combo down to near $100 to have any shot if he needs everything else except an SSD.
