Ian, I'm sorry I can't be more specific on the details, I only have the 'lite' version of GT4 that comes bundled with the Cakewalk VS-20 interface - I actually use Cakewalk's SONAR X1 Producer.

However, there is a newer version of Guitar Rig (GRig4LE) which is bundled with SONAR and I just ran the installation disc for that in the same way as I advised you.

The default installation folder for the .dll plug-in is, in effect, already there. In fact it's created whenever you install whatever version of Cakewalk recording software you're using. It's called VST Plug-ins and installs here on a 64bit OS:
  • Computer > OS(C) > Program Files (x86) > Cakewalk > VST Plug-ins

This is the default location for Cakewalk's 32bit recording software. Incidentally, Cakewalk software that also comes in 64bit versions creates a folder in Program Files (64bit), but as GTPro4 is only available in a 32bit version, this folder won't be created when you install it. I mention this just in case your LE version of X1 has created the 64bit folder, and GRig3 has been installed there. If it has, I don't think GTPro4 will be able to scan that folder successfully. The full path is:
  • Computer > OS(C) > Program Files > Cakewalk > VST Plug-ins

Anyway, let me know how you get on with re-installing GTPro4, but before you do that, I'd just check to see if either of the folders I mention has been already created, and if the GRig3 .dll is hiding inside.

I tried to find GR3 again through GTP4 after the reinstall, but no dice.

Searching through Windows Explorer, showed Program Files, and Program files (x86). In the Program Files (x86) I found the Cakewalk files. Opening that showed audio creator, cakewalk, shared DXI, MIDI plugins etc, plus the VST plugins folder. Opening it up shows Boost 11, Guitar Rig, and Studio Instruments. However on double clicking, there's nothing in the Guitar Rig folder, although the other two have there respective .dll files inside.

Previously I had tried to install only the GRig from the GTP4 CD. That gave me a shortcut on the desktop for GRig3. Opening it shows the software in the background, and a window showing demo, buy or activate. go to go to work, more later!

I found Grig 3.dll, even posted it on the desktop, but GTP4 still can't find it. When I go to the manage plug-in layouts, the only one listed under VST audio is Boost 11. I can't seem to get it to find the GRig3.dll file, it simply doesn't want to know. I've tried copying and pasting the name, but all it does is change the name of Boost 11, and although the effects show GRig3.dll name, it's still actually Boost 11.

Now that is strange Ian.

I may have to admit defeat on this one, I've never known anything like that to happen.

I'd suggest you contact Cakewalk Tech Support and see what they make of it. You can phone or e-mail them.

If you're in the US, the number is toll-free: (Mon-Fri 9am-8pm EST): 888.CAKEWALK or 617.423.9004 - if you're based elsewhere, the call won't be free, and may last quite a while.

If you want to e-mail them, there's a form on this page: http://www.cakewalk.com/About/csr.asp

In either case, give them as much information as you can, maybe even mention this thread.

Good luck with it anyway, let us know how you get on.

Just one other thing comes to mind Ian.

Have you updated GTPro4 to the latest version: Guitar Tracks Pro 4.0.5?

The download, and all the relevant information, can be found on THIS PAGE

Steve, I've finally admitted defeat and contacted Cakewalk Tech. Support. Let's see what they come up with. It's so annoying because the damned file is there, but GTP4 just doesn't want to find it.

One other point, which may or may not be related, is that when I open up Guitar Rig 3, it tells me to register the product, but when I click on the registration tab in the window, it checks around and tells me it's already registered. Spooky.

More when Cakewalk reply.

Let us know how you get on with that Ian.

By the way, if you're interested in using other Standalone/VST amp modellers, check out some of the info I put in THIS THREAD - IK Multimedia have a free download of their Ampltitube 3 software available and, in my honest opinion, it's much better that Guitar Rig 3 LE (or GRig 4 LE for that matter). And you can also purchase additional amps/effects/cabinets to expand the free set-up at pretty reasonable prices.

No reply from Cakewalk as yet, Steve.

The reason I bought GTP4 was to be able to record myself along with pre recorded drum beats/bass etc. so that I didn't forget any nice riffs or anything. And I wanted to be able to play 'live' with the amps effects, so it looked just the job. It's turn out to be a total pain, I've had it 3 weeks and managed sod all so far!

I hear what you say about Amplitude but at the moment I'm wary about spending any more cash 'cos I could be in the same situation with GTP4 not picking up or recognising yet another VST. Guess I'll juast have to wait and trust the Cakewalk boys to do their stuff.

Got a reply from Cakewalk Tech telling me to do exactly what I've been doing for the last three weeks. Just about to reply to them, when all of a sudden, GTP4 decides to recognise GRig 3 on yet another VST scan! Spooky!

Anyway, thanks for your assistance Steve, much appreciated. No doubt Christmas will not be quite so boring as usual for me this year!

I may well invest in Amplitude in due course.
