Hiya Grant,

I would be into Numan and the like also, that analog classic synth sound. Add to that Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Eno, Jarre.

For that sound the best investment I made ( in my opinion only, others may differ ) is the ARTURIA synths.

https://www.arturia.com/products

Just click on ANALOG CLASSICS along the horizontal menu with black background.

The best deal is the V Collection which includes the lot ( 17 vst synths ) :

https://www.arturia.com/p.../v-collection/overview

Dont despair at the €499 price .. :D .. Arturia do regular great sale prices for this at sites like Plugin Boutique, so keep an eye. I managed to pick up the V Collection Version 4 in 2015 for $149 .. then in May 2017 upgraded ( via a native instruments offer ) for €83 for V Collection 5 .. but that gave me extra instruments also.

Another more affordable option is to JUST BUY the ANALOG LAB Vst / Instrument for €89. This is a one stop shop with the best of from all the individual synths in the V Collection. It would also get you in the door for deals to buy the full V Collection further down the road. But the ANALOG LAB might be a good start for you without breaking the bank.

All these vst synths are emulations of the real thing used by Numan, T Dream, Jarre etc. TBH .. these alone covers everything for that retro feel and sound. I am now on a 12" core i7 laptop with Sonar and ONLY the Arturia stuff so I can focus on that sound without getting way laid by other VSTs :D ..

BTW .. all have demos. I love them all. And really like the SEM V. Great arpeggios ..

At this link are PRESET Packs that you can buy giving you sounds from T Dream, Kraftwerk etc. These preset packs also work in ANALOG LAB

I have to say, that is one of my favorite soft synths!  Great sounds, with lots of free patch banks!

Another one of my favorite freebies is the u-he designed Tyrell6.
https://www.u-he.com/cms/tyrelln6
Download links here: https://www.amazona.de/freeware-synth-tyrell-n6-v3-03/

It is a good circuit modeled emulation of the classic Roland Juno 60 analog synth.  There are a lot of free patch banks for this one as well.

With these two free synths, you can cover a lot of ground!

I also think that the suggestion to explore Arturia Analog Lab (full or free demo) is a good one.  Pick out your favorite synths and look around at the options available to add individual synths to your collection (or pick up the whole thing on sale).

I have the IK Multimedia Syntronik collection, which uses sample based oscillators + modeled filters, and sounds very good.  They have created 17 virtual instruments with samples taken from 38 vintage analog synthesizers.  They do not attempt exact model replicas of the original synths as Arturia does, but the sounds are very inspiring!  You can download a free version with example patches from all 17 instruments, as well as any individual full instrument for $49.

Yup, got that one already, it's a keeper!  With a total of 21 banks now, OB-Xd is up to about 817 patches here!

Aidan

Thanks Aidan for all of that. We are spoilt for choice. I've just reinstalled Windows and I'm currently reinstalling Sonar and the instruments, etc.
At the moment my priority is to get better with and learn more about Sonar. Then I will feel like I deserve to get more sounds and experiment more.

As for Depeche Mode (as I saw you mention) recently I've coincidentally been listening to (and watching) `Depeche Mode-World In My Eyes' posted by YouTube user Rui Andre Oliveira. It's the Cicada Remix. Pretty cool, and a steamy video, too. (I didn't post it here to keep things on topic.)
Cheers.

Don't feel as if you have to learn everything about Sonar all at once, unless you plan to be an engineer.

Sonar is an entire virtual recording studio in a box. 90% of the time, I just use it as a synth rack, LOL!!!  Then hopefully, the other 10% of the time inspiration will hit me!!!  Some sounds can do that!!!

Just think about what you want to accomplish, and learn those bits first.  The best way is to locate a few tutorials that show you step by step techniques for your type of projects, and work through them.

Then if you have any specific questions, that aren't answered in the help documents, the forum is always here to help with "how do I " questions ...

And the Sonar Power book by Scott Garrigus is a good resource.  I have the Sonar X3 version and it covers all the basics.  There are lots of new features in Sonar since X3, but since the current GUI is based on the X series, it's not all that different, except for some elements, but the core workflow should still be the same.  The same can be said for videos based on the X1-X3 versions.  Hopefully Scott will release an update one of these days!
