I was wondering if anyone had any tips on getting a drum sound like this song:

Preferably using Addictive Drums 2 as my drums and figuring out ways to shape the sound to get closer to this sound.
 
Any input is appreciated while I'm over here tinkering :-)

definitely a real kit that got some serious treatment in the mix, so you might get lucky to able to reproduce it somehow soundwise with a sampled kit.
 
I would start with an AD2 kit that got a lot of good room to it. then you need to work it hard with the tools you got. listen deeply how different it sounds throughout the song sections. when the arrangement gets thick, the drums sound almost gated i.e. each hit disappears before the next comes leaving room for the rest, which changes again when then arrangement gets less dense ... definitely somebody at work here who knew exactly what he wanted to do
 
of course, hand claps samples. lots. not quantised. and it sounds like some stomping going on which is a bit off the kick in the early parts ...

Parallel distortion. My favorite plugins for that are Redopter or Devastor from D16 Group, but an amp sim will work. If your drums are multitracked you can put the distortion plugin on a bus and then tweak the amount of distortion individually for each kit piece. I like to automate the sends, so I can have different tones in different parts of the song. Also try putting reverb and/or delay on the parallel-distortion bus for a neat effect that won't clutter the main drum track.

GOOD DRUM SOUNDS = GOOD DRUMS.
 
samples are fine,
but have the character of 'samples'
 
i use superior drummer for writing my material,
but i use live drums at every opportunity.
 
most of the 'best' drum sounds, the samples, that is, are producers' own samples from exceptional kits they have already recorded.
 
you start with the individual piece of kit.
 
the dry capture is one thing.....
the 'room' capture is another.
 
the magic happens, when you combine the two in that 'magic' combination of level.
 
eq, compression, limiting, distortion, enhancement.......... bah.
 
that's not where the magic is.

all great ideas. thanks guys. i'll be playing with this track this week trying to figure it out more and I'll definitely take some of this into account.
