Thanks! Danny

I'm really happy with my M-Audio BX8 monitors (8"; I have the D2 version), but they are a little out of your price range. I would expect the BX5 monitors (5") to also be very good, and you can get a pair for under $400.

If you don't mind a crimson cone instead of black, you can get a pair for $300.

Danny,
Check out  JBL's LSR 305, a standard for many years.  Presonus came out with the Eris-E5 and has merit.

Actually the LSR 305 series has not been around that long. The LSR 6 and 8 series (discontinued but occasionally pop up on EBay) were around for quite awhile before the 305's came out a few years ago.. I have had the LSR8's and LSR12 (subwoofer) for years and have been very happy with them. The LSR8's are big, heavy and I think ran about $700 each. The 305's, by comparison are lighter and significantly less expensive. They seem to get good reviews but I am not sure they are really directly comparable to the older line. That isn't necessarily to say that they are not just as good or maybe even an improvement, just that the transition from the LSR6 and 8 line was not really a typical product evolution, more like a whole new product line.

By LSR 6 and 8, I meant 4326 and 4328. Not to be confused with the 6000 series (6328) which was around $1500 a pop. Also worth noting that there is currently a 308 model with 8 inch woofer that runs about $500 for the pair.

Yamaha HS7's are good value and sound very well balanced. They do have a slightly forward mid range and top end though. (Like the NS10's but not quite as much) But still very nice to listen though over long periods. I use them a second reference set of speakers.
