I'm still not cracking the dark art of mixing though...it just doesn't translate to laptop speakers etc. I've been conscious of not letting mud build up during mixing and tracking but I think on smaller range speakers/ phones, the midrange just isn't really present enough.
One day I'd like to let my friends and family listen...and I just know they will listen on all manner of crappy speakers/ phones...and from their point of view what they hear will be a pile of.......
Anyway, I'll just have to keep plugging along. I can bring the range of the bass guitar up more to fill out the low mids in this song...same as the drums...and I can increase the volume and presence of the organ in the mids too. That way the vocal may not seem to be riding so high above the rhythm part of the song. And the chasm I hear on laptop speakers between drum and bass/ vocal and guitar might get more nicely compressed together and filled out in that mid range.
