A long (and very highly recommended!) 4 part interview with E-mu founder Dave Rossum touching on everything from the early days of analog, to collaborating with other synth legends, to the birth of sampling, to the design of custom DSP chips, to the difficulties of the music technology business, to the deal with Creative Labs - and it even explains where Digital Sound Factory came from (before they showed up in the Cakewalk store):

Dave is currently working the floor at NAMM for the first time in like 25 years showing eurorack modular modules based on classic E-mu designs with his new venture, Rossum Electro-Music:

That was just about exactly what I needed to relax at the end of the week.  Good stuff and just more proof of how hard it is to produce quality products for a target market that's "usually broke!"

For some reason many potential customers often seem unwilling to spend money they don't have. Go figure.

Great read!

I miss some of the old things like the EMU APS card. Well not that much, because sound quality wise se are so far ahead. But the implementation of the samples into the system was genial, UA has the same with their sound cards but that is effects. Yes, you can do the same with the Creative cards, but the sound quality is not that good compared to the new Soft Synths. And you wont have the best audio processors and latency.

Sound Fonts will always have a place in my heart.
