  • Question About Focusrite Scarlett default after new driver install.

I'm just wondering if there would be any reason that my 2i4 interface would have a 'default format' of 48000 within windows. This is after installing new drivers.  I usually go in and set the sample rate to 44.1 withing the focusrite software. I also get periodic glitches in my windows audio while doing non-DAW related computing. I haven't really ever figured out if the sample rate needs to be the same in windows as in the DAW.

Did the new driver V4.36.4 actually get installed?  One of the fixes noted for the 2i2 driver is that it saves the settings.  I checked my 6i6 (2nd gen) and there was a new version for it and it too noted the setup retention.

Changes since the last release (4.15):

  • Fixed an issue that could cause audio dropouts/distortion after a long period of time
  • ASIO Control Panel retains buffer size/sample rate between disconnects/restarts
  • Fixed an issue with combined MIDI and Audio streaming at low buffer sizes

And what happens if you change it to 44mhz?  Should be set and forget. (I'd change it to 24-bit as well).

I just updated to the latest Focusrite 2i4 gen 1 driver (4.36.4) and noticed that it changed the windows settings to 48000 but only on the initial install. After changing the default back to 44000 and then rebooting, the default remained at 44000.
(I have Sonar set to 44000.) I'm glad I noticed your thread. Updating to the latest 4.36.4 driver (from 4.2x) solved my pops and clicks on this new Sonar install.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've had a pretty busy week and haven't had time to get back to this.

Basically, in the drop down menu, I wasn't able to change the value to 44.1k or 24bit. However, I am able to do it through the Focusrite interface software. After that windows does indeed seem to retain these settings.
I guess I was more just wondering how these two settings relate to each other. I'm under the impression that only Sonar will be using ASIO and therefor the driver settings. Not a huge deal, was just curious.

I'm thinking going back to PCI-E is going to be the way forward for me.  USB and external devices have their advantages although I'm having issues doing certain stuff with my current Focusrite driver outside ASIO functions.

Would be curious to know about the problems you are having outside ASIO.

Inability to record certain inputs under WDM, like not sharing access to the audio stream. I managed to route through the ASIO driver and record the input from the XLR connnector in Sonar. However I don't do a lot of that type of recording. Mainly audio and synth mixing really.

PowerDVD 15 won't recognise version 4 driver however the ASIO driver is much more stable. It means use another sound device and separate speaker outputs.  I have the onboard sound or I could reinstall my old EMU 1212M......decisions. However as the EMU 1212M uses 1/4" connectors I will have issues.

Therefore a brand new PCI-E option would benefit me. Alternatively a desk-sized mixer with more than one output. Not cheap or an easy choice.

Musical just posted this in the Computer's Forum and thought I'd pass it on here as well. For those of us that have the 1st generations, try downloading/installing the 2nd generation drivers of your model as that seems to work (just don't select 192kHz).

I hope it works out well on my 2i4 as it does everything I need (for now). :))

The latest drivers only work on the bus-powered Scarletts, 2i4 being the highest model on which they will work. I bought a 1st generation 2i4 from Focusrite on clearance for £89.99 and, with all the free plugins and the low latency second generation drivers, it is one of the best purchases I have ever made. You might need to uninstall the gen 1 drivers before installing gen 2. I knew the gen 2 drivers work, so installed those clean.
