  • Which 61 key keyboard controller? (p.3)

Thanks very much.
So far the following works in Sonar via my controller keyboard:
The Play, Stop and Fast Forward buttons work 100% of the time. The Rewind button sometimes doesn't work (although the display changes on the controller) unless I Fast Forward first. The Record button doesn't do anything at the moment.

Just to make sure at the moment, here are my settings:

Audio - Devices

Audio - Driver Settings

MIDI - Devices

MIDI - Instruments (I haven't manually changed this.)

MIDI - Control Surfaces

Just to throw in a noob question, I'm assuming that I don't need to use any MIDI cables between my Code 61 and Focusrite 2i4? There's no added feature or benefit? (I do have some unused ones from 20 years ago.) All I'm using at the moment are the USB cable from the controller to the PC, and the USB cable from the 2i4 to the PC.

Thank you for your time.

The configuration looks fine. No extra MIDI cables required.

I find it strange rewind does not always work and record does not work at all. There are bugs with fast moving in Sonar, under some conditions. But I have never seen record is not working, have you tested with some track armed?
And what about faders, knobs, buttons, pads? They should do something...

Yes, sorry that's my mistake! I wasn't arming the track. With the track armed, the record button on the Code 61 starts the recording in Sonar. Thanks

The pads work and produce sounds. The Code 61 Master Slider changes Sonar's Master audio volume and the green peak meter in Sonar changes accordingly, but it doesn't move the Master volume slider up or down in Sonar. Is it supposed to?

The Code 61's F2 and F3 sliders also change the sound parameters, and the E1 knob adjusts the balance, I think.

I haven't tested the other buttons and things, as I'm still learning the basics and researching bits and pieces.

I'm fixated on having Sonar's Master volume slider move up and down if I adjust the volume slider on the Code 61. As a beginner, I'm not sure if it is supposed to be able to or not. (If not it's no big deal.)

Thanks very much. It's all good fun.

As I have mentioned before, open Utilities / Mackie Control -1 and in the left lower corner set what master slider should control. Can be Hardware outputs (default) or a bus (of your choice, by number).

I have looked into Code documentation again, in fact they document Mackie Control mode. So read "Code Series User Guide", search for chapters with Mackie Control, separate for each controlling group (f.e. Faders / Modes/ Mackie Control/HUI Mode). You can start with page 96 to get general idea.
Unfortunately it looks like Code has only Mackie Strip controls and does not imitate any right side original Mackie unit buttons. That significantly restrict what Code can do.
I have mentioned before, to get more you have to invest time into AZ Controller.

Thanks for all of your help azslow3. I'll look into AZ Controller in the near future when I need to dial things in even more.

At the moment, I've also got more things to work now. I followed this video on YouTube `M-Audio || Introduction & Overview on the Code Series'. I wasn't in Mackie mode! A simple noob mistake, I'm afraid. So as soon as the Code 61 is in Mackie mode, the buttons turn to green as opposed to being multiple colors. Then the faders control the track volumes, the buttons select the tracks, and knobs control the panning of the tracks (for now).

As for the Master slider, thank you. I followed what you said (Utilities - Mackie Control 1) and then changed the Master Fader option from Master to Bus, which now controls the Master volume. (I hope that was the correct thing to do.)

It's great to see the volume dials move in Sonar now when I adjust the faders on the Code 61. Call me a noob, but it's starting to feel like a studio. I'm loving Sonar so far.

I am glad you like your setup. And you are welcome in case you have future questions.

But please do not look into AZ Controller yourself... It is complicated even for MIDI experts and programmers. If/when you have time and willing to extend the functionality of your Code, just contact me.

OK. Thank you.

I've just put a deposit on my Native Instruments Kontrol S88. Hope to have it by the end of August.

Hi Alexsey - guess I'll have to setup a bat phone for direct communication with you at that time. Lol.

(Extended) transport keys definition already exist for NI.

May be we can make auto-track switching working. I mean what "native" supported DAWs have: switch tracks with controller, when not NI track is selected - switch to MIDI mode, when NI track is selected - switch to NKS for corresponding instance.
The problem is not switching tracks, nor sending the information to keyboard (some "known" DAW use text based scripting language for control surfaces, so we can get required information from there). But Sonar has no feature to return which track belong to which synth... In some topology that is not possible, tricks will not help. But with several prescriptions what should be avoided, I think we can make it.

Not to hijack this, but to clarify:  The Komplete S series is good to go as well as the Nektar LX series?  What about the new Panorama series?  The S series has some nice features but looks like its tied primarily to NI products.
I don't want to spend time f'n around with midi and other drivers/settings all day.
I am also ignorant about a Sonar controller (no keyboard).  What is out there that integrates well with Sonar without dealing with excessive setup?  This may be better for me than the kb controller since I already have many keyboards.
