One of these days I'll surprise you synth guys and break out my guitar synth. I honestly do have one. I only bought it to use for video work, but one of these days....

I would listen, I am looking at getting MIDI Guitar from Jam Origin to use my guitars with, so I would be interested in hearing your work.  I just love synths have done since I first heard them and also when I stumbled over an old semi modular ARP when I was at college.

I don't have much experience with them Wook. I have a GK-3 pickup that I tried mounted on both a steel string acoustic and a Les Paul. I also had a Godin SA model with a built-in synth pickup. These all went through the same GR-20 synth. The Godin tracked worst of all. Actually, the GK-3 mounted on my Taylor 314 tracked best. I wouldn't trust any of the junk you read in forums about how this or that midi guitar tracks so great. I have a video comparing the tracking of the Godin to the GK-3 on my Taylor.

From one of the commenters on my video:

This is a very good and really accurate demo of both pickup systems. I have both. I have a Roland G-808 guitar controller from 1980. I have an old Strat with a wonderful Roland GK-1 pickup mounted. I have 3 other guitars - one being my Taylor 315-CE with Roland GK-2A pickups mounted. I also have a beautiful Godin xt-SA that I love playing, but I hate to say the synth tracking sucks on it. I bought it because I was told by so many people (who I thought were in the know) that the Godin system ruled. Not so. Any (and all) of the Roland pickups work and track way better than Godin's design. This video here clearly demonstrates that Roland is still the frontrunner for guitar synth savvy.

But I don't want to completely discourage you Wookie from buying a midi guitar of some kind. You might find one that works well for you. I just want you to be aware that the GK-3 pickup is pretty darn good with any guitar and is cheap.

Great stuff, Wookie. Really like this one. Has a real sense of momentum to it.

Thanks for the info Bill, Have you not seen Jam Origins MIDI Guitar 2 no need for any Hex pickups, just run the software, it can use any VSTi's install on your system.  There is a demo to try.

Thank you Robert, nice to know you enjoyed it.

No, I haven't seen that one. I know Fishman has some kind of device that lets you use any guitar with a synth too without need of a pickup. Reviews seem to be hit and miss with that one. The old Synthaxe like Allan Holdsworth used is supposed to have been the best, but it was $6,000 and they don't make them anymore. And the ancient Roland that Pat Metheny still uses (GR-300 maybe?) tracked really well, but it's sound options were limited and it hasn't been manufactured in decades either.

Actually, for recording purposes you can probably get by with any of the current crop of guitar synths since you can overdub and fix your glitches. To be honest, I wouldn't want to play any of them live. When those false triggered notes do happen, they can sound really nasty and out of key. If I had a Synthaxe, I might give that one a go live. I wish somebody would come out with a newer and much cheaper version of it. I'd love to own a Synthaxe, but a guy's gotta eat.

Let us know if and when you get one. I'd love to hear it!

If I see one I will, although I probably won't buy one since I hardly ever use synth for anything. I'm mostly just an old fingerpicker.

this one's kinda ravey!

i dig the rolling bass line that meets up with the midrange melody......

at times, this reminds me of stuff i've heard before,
then, i can't put my finger on any one song or band (that's a good thing)

it's almost like weather report meets deadMau5...... LOL

i can hear ambient guitar on this ( of course i can )

you could easily AMP this up with a hard disco/rock beat halfway thru, and really drive it...
then roll it back near the end.

as it is, i like it
nice work
