I have windows 8. I have the software downloaded. My problem is I cant hear the playback. I don't have any input options. My microphone sometimes works and when it does it still says I dont have any inputs. What should i buy? Other than a new microphone? And should it just be any microphone? Do I need any other gadgets? Do i need special headphones? My normal skullcandy headphones don't mingle with the microphone I have now?  Is it because I have windows 8 that it wont show me any inputs? And I don't know about the midi inputs or anything like that. What do I need to buy?
As you can tell, I know nothing! please help me.

Did you let the wave profiler run?

That looks at the sound card in the computer and the other audio and midi devices connected to the computer and puts them in a list and makes them available.

If you are not seeing anything.... run the profiler and be sure you have an interface or midi device attached before you run it.

a midi device is the microphone, right?

nope. The midi device would be a keyboard connected by a USB cable or a combination audio/midi interface.

Audio devices like USB mics and audio interfaces show up in the AUDIO DEVICES list and all midi things show up under MIDI DEVICES.

Your sound card in the computer should show up as an audio device... inputs and outputs. Usually stereo R&L,....If it's a laptop and you have nothing else connected, that's what you would normally see. In a case like that, it's normal NOT to see MIDI devices since there are none connected.

is your microphone connected by USB?  if so, it is also a soundcard.  albeit a ONE WAY soundcard.  and those are difficult at best to get to play nice with MC.

also - are your skullcandy headphones connected by USB as well or do they plug in using a 1/8" jack on the computer?

if USB, then those are also a soundcard.  trying to get 2 USB devices to work as soundcards will likely be nearly impossible.

my best advice would be to ditch both of those and get a recording soundcard if you can afford it.  ask for assistance if you don't know what to get.
