It's not a go-between utility. It's a basic part of the MIDI signal path to TTS-1(or any soft synth).
What's unusual is that you are seeing the user bank. The MIDI track would normally be directed to a preset bank, where all of the GM2 sounds are already stored.
My guess is that the source file may be directing the bank setting to something beyond what TTS-2 can read. GS has a lot more sounds than GM2.
Where are these files coming from?
The Piano 1 patch is simply a placeholder in an otherwise empty bank. The majority of your instruments are in Preset Normal 1 and 0.
Do you insert TTS-1 as a simple instrument track, or separate MIDI and synth audio tracks?
These files are simple MIDIs from real songs that I like to listen to on the Roland TTS1 as it has a soft, cool sound for me.
I normally insert the TTS1 using the "Insert soft synth" option, as a single track, and it works very well. But in its native Music Creator 6 Touch it doesn't work with GS/GM2 melodic presets and it either chooses the Piano 1 or the GM equivalent, but not the actual preset of the song.
Say it selects the Gunshot instead of the Laser Gun, the Rhodes Piano instead of the Detuned one, etc, and some songs kinda lose their tone because of that.
I'd love to listen to those sounds as they are meant to be heard, and for now I can only do that with soundfonts. With the TTS1 I have to set them manually but this kinda ruins the purpose of easy listening a playlist in RealBand or listening to a single song with MC6 from the get go.
Additionally, I might try something like that VSTHost, as in the video below, but I don't know... there has to be something wrong. I set RealBand to General MIDI 2 patches as default, it should work...
