  • Best Place To Sell Music Gear?

Up till now I've always sold thru eBay. But after getting stiffed by a buyer claiming an item was defective when it wasn't (it was returned in working condition but slightly damaged and I'm out shipping for both ways and selling fees), I researched eBay and found a lot of sellers are getting stiffed by bogus buyer claims. It's now too easy for ebay buyers to make false claims.

So the need for a better, seller friendly, sales outlet is in order. Any ideas?

I buy and sell on Craigslist. I got majorly ripped off on eBay and avoid it. Gearslutz also has a trading/buy/sell page.

I think without a doubt, reverb.com
They make it simple and painless. Especially if you have multiple things to sell.
It takes a little effort to set up your paypal or whatever payment system to use, but once it's set up, its' very easy and convenient!

It's worth the loss to me to take a load of gear to GC and get *something* for it along with deep discounts if I'm looking to buy something else.  Especially when I have several items to get rid of.

OTOH, if I had one or two higher end items I would likely go with reverb.  So far I've kept my higher end stuff.

Too many reports of people getting ripped off, locally, on Craig's list.  I only sold one item on e-bay and it wasn't a problem.  I tried selling twice on the gearslutz forum and never got any responses.  I belong to the steelguitar forum and sell mostly on there as its a "closed" forum - only members can contact other members, e-mail, personal info is shielded from non members.

Craigslist is the only way I have sold gear. Being realistic about the value makes it easier.

Another place is KVR Marketplace....although most of it is software, I've seen a lot of hardware.

How about supporting your local music shop if they take consignments and charge a slight fee.  That is what I always do to give back to the local community.  I really like having a local place to go if I need something in a pinch other than the huge music stores nearer to the city.

I've sold smaller things on Ebay, and it has gone well.
For bigger items (guitars, amps, etc) I've used Craigslist and similar face-to-face sites.  With these, you have to weed through a lot of low offers and time wasters, but there are no shipping issues and have cash in hand.

I've looked at selling consignment in a music store, but haven't actually sent any hardware this way yet.  It has the benefit of someone being able to see it, try it, etc.  but for a price.

Check out reverb.com.   It works much like Ebay (but with much more reasonable fees if you're selling).  I've bought and sold a  few things there, and it's been a pleasant experience so far.
