  • My rant about shopping for internal HDDs.

Many online vendors are hiding the RPM speed.
I'm looking for possible another internal 2TB drive.  It looks like WD no longer makes a Blue in that size and 7200 RPM.  Blacks are pricier and I prefer WB Blue because the only drives I ever RMA'd were WD Black.  One of the other differences in Blacks is they offer a larger cache.

Seagate offers 2TBs at 7200 RPM.  I haven't bought a Seagate in a while so I don't know what their quality is like anymore. With WD they do have the best RMA policy out there.  They send you a drive and you send the other one back.

I hate shopping for drives since they are now hiding RPM specs. That rant is often seen on a site's Q&A.

Where are you shopping at?  I tend to buy PC components from Amazon or Newegg, and they usually list "7200 RPM" in the product title.  I'd stay away from any company that can't be bothered to offer basic specs....

Those are the two that don't unless you check the preferences in Newegg.

I usually check the manufacturers website to decide what to get and then purchase at Amazon or Newegg. I must say, though, that the hybrid drives form Seagate are really nice. I've noticed a significant speed increase for "normal" HD usage. And they come with 7200 RPM as well.

I bought a WD 2TB drive recently (not for audio) and realised they don't make 7200 RPM drives anymore. Seemingly the 5400 RPM ones perform just as good nowadays - due to more platters and densely packed data. I read an article about it - but I can't find it now.

I checked with dskbench and Crystal Disk Mark - and sure enough, it's just as fast as my Seagate 2TB 7200 RPM disk!

I'm perfectly happy with Toshiba DT01ACA300 3T drives.  I have several and they've never been a problem; I've had the first one more than a year now, maybe two.  Easily found at < $90

Jbraner, I read the same thing somewhere. New 5200 HDs perform about the sane as 7200. I got 5200 WD drives for the reduced sound.

News to me.  I vaguely remember some prefs in Newegg, but not in Amazon (Where I spend a lot of time).

In any case, I must have done a "set and forget" on both years ago, because I don't do anything special now... If you require that info, why wouldn't you have those preferences checked?

Microcenter has a WD Blue 1TB @ 7200 for $45.

I just installed a WD Elements USB 3.0 drive (2.5"-5400rpm) and was surprised that it did almost as good in CrystalDiskMark as my internal SATA III (on a SATA II port) WD Blue 1TB 7200 rpm 64MB cache HDD.
