I use full mode, because I can configure it any way I want to.
DAW mode is simpler to deal with, but removes most of the mixer settings, the software playback channels and most routing functions, so all routing and (I think - away from DAW so can't check) monitoring has to be set up in the DAW.
Trying DAW mode won't hurt anything, and if you then reset totalmix back to full mode it should restore the last settings used in full mode.
