Great song needs a bit of magic on the mix but very tight, Thanks

What do you suggest on the mix?

Edit: Earlier mixes were very weak on the bass side of things. I changed it in that regard.

There is a lot of goodness in this mix in terms of clarity, balance and panning. But I hear a lot of frequency masking, and a general lack of the "sparkle" frequencies up top. An exciter and/or EQ on the snare and tambourine would help them cut through. Look at applying complementary EQ to make the left and right rhythm guitars contrast better - they're too similar.

I'd also apply some volume automation to bring out some of the little touches like the answering guitar licks leading into the bridge. While listening to a mix, try to identify - moment by moment - the one thing that you want the listener to focus on most and make sure that thing rises to the top. Even if it's just a one-second phrase or accent.

Thanks a lot bitflipper. I'm really struggling with mixing. I can't hear accurately what's going on and my 'mixing vocabulary' is weak. It's really discouraging to go to so much trouble to record and then not be able to represent things in the mix.

I have a lot of trouble with tones...drums, guitars and bass though in the recording phase, so it's not only mixing.

Pull the kick back a little and take some of the top off it. A bit more verb on the drums, vocals, and main guitar would help it too. Don't drench it. Just take it out for a short swim. You recorded the instruments fine, but it sounds like you've got quite a bit of compression or limiting going on with the mix. You're very close. It's a 5-minute fix. Just padding that kick will help a lot.

I liked the song the more I listened.  I too am weak on mixing.  I can mix dry tracks get them balanced and then add some effects but I leave the fine mixing to my pard, Mark Cline.  I agree that something is holding it back from being all that it can be but I cant say what.  I just wante you to know it is a cool song and a fun listen!

Like the song, not in a position to give mixing advise. Can just comment that it sounds a bit "muffeled"  in some sort of way to me.

I would tend to agree. It sounds 'ok' on 3 out of the 4 headphones I own...but tends to sound a tad muffled on my Sennheiser hd280 pros. I would guess that I haven't been able to zero in on the frequencies I ought to have, as a result of poor monitoring during the mix stage.
