I've always used the Home or whatever they called it but with 10 I'm wondering about the extra Defender tools and the ability to control updates or decline them, though I would likely not want to decline them. I read somewhere that with the home version and the anniversary update, you can manage updates to only be active when you are not working or using your computer, IIRC, choose a 12 hour block of time where MS can detect your system is usually idle and do updates at that time and never bother you with popups during the 12 hour block you choose for worktime. That is good and may be good enough considering the ability to rollback if an update causes problems.... leaving the only real concern: the extra functions of Defender available in Professional. So, all things considered would it, in your opinion, be $99 well spent or $99 blown?

If you're connected to the Internet 24/7, it's nice to have Pro (where you can apply a registry tweak to prevent automatic download of updates).
If you disconnect from the Internet, this isn't an issue.
 
Otherwise, unless you need more advanced "Admin" type features, Home is just fine.

I'm on W10 Enterprise at work and M$ are continually screwing with my machine's settings without my permission or knowledge.  Pissing me off tbh, I was on site recently to provide some consultation and needed to connect remotely to my dev machine.  M$ had decided to screw with its network settings without my knowledge or permission, changing the network location from 'private' to 'public' which prevents remote desktop access.  Very embarrassing, we had to offer the customer a refund or a re-schedule in the end.

If you want to use more than 16GB of RAM you need Pro.

FWIW, That hasn't been the case since Win7.
Win8 and Win10 x64 Home can both use 128GB RAM.

The registry tweak doesn't work under Win10 Home.
Under Win10 Pro, it'll prompt that updates are available... but it won't automatically download and install them.
Enterprise is not necessary.

If you don't want to unplug, get Win10 Pro.

Well - The anniversary version of windows will remove some group policy's from Windows 10 Pro.

This means you cannot longer turn off things like Microsoft consumer experiences policy and much more. While I liked Windows 10, I needed (for instance) to run some older (not signed) drivers for my hardware. As this is not longer possible (only with "upgraded" systems and not with a "clean" install), I decided to roll back to Windows 8.1. Windows 10 is too intrusive for my likings, and who knows what they will cut off and cripple even more from the "Pro" version in the near future.
 
I certainly will not pay for a Windows version that degrades the "Pro" version into what is effectively a "Home" version. As Windows 8.1 Pro still has all the policy's in place and it is supported until January 10, 2023, I see no reason to install Windows 10 on any of my systems.
 
So - for the foreseeable future I stay with Windows 7/8.1 Pro on my systems (with my policy's in place, and blocked telemetry "updates"). I will see what will happen after 2023, but I have time enough to decide what to do when time comes.
