I wanted to unmute a vocal track during the chorus so I automated the mute button. The mute button unmutes where it's supposed to on playback but there is no audio. I soloed the track while it was unmuted, still nothing. If I switch back to manual mute and unmute it I get audio.

Try right clicking the Mute Button and choose Switch to Automated Mute

That was the first thing I did. I don't think you can even automate the mute without doing that, can you?

How could I switch back to manual mute if I didn't have it on automated mute?

Okay, this is interesting. The track is switched to automated mute in console view but it's still in manual mute in track view?!
So I switched to automated mute in track view and lit the R and W buttons.

Now the mute button reads the automation, IOW unmutes where it's supposed to, but...

No audio. The track's output is assigned to the same bus the lead vocal, which I can hear loud and clear, is assigned to. I solo the track when it's unmuted and I get silence. The waveform shows a lead vocal.

If you enable the automation lanes on the track in question, is there an envelope for the mute?

If not, create one either by recording your automation moves with Write Enable on or by choosing Track > Automation > Mute

You need to drag sections of the envelope up to un-mute a particular section.

I was going to reply to this thread the other day and suggest the same thing as BJ (to open a lane) but I wasn't sure if Mute button had one or not (sorry never used Mutton automation).

However, wouldn't this whole thing be a lot easier by just creating a volume envelope and cutting it at sections you want no sound ?
I mean I agree, mute button would be nice and possible easier but for all that going on here (2 days later) Just create a volume envelope and call it a day.

Yeah, the Automated Mute function does create an envelope, but I find that it's a very "hard" transition between off and on which can produce nasty pops/clicks in the audio.

For this reason, I seldom use them these days, preferring to use volume automation where it's easy to introduce a short fade in/out to avoid the above issues.

Automated mute is easier/ faster for me and I don't get any clicks or pops.
In any case, there is an envelope created when I use it. The automation record shows it unmuting and the mute button turns off (grey) but there is no audio. I presume that there would be no audio if I drew the envelope by hand also.

What is a good picture hosting site? I used to use photobucket but now they want you to pay for 3rd party hosting which I only use at this site. It might be useful if I could upload a couple of screen shots.

For hosting I use Imgur.

You can do this however you choose but..This is much easier using an Automation lane.
Use the smart tool and swipe the selection / then when you see the cursor turn to a double sided arrow / drag down to completely kill the volume.

In most cases drawing by hand is thee most effective and efficient way to work. its easy, just click to open a lane like I did in the video above. Automation lanes open a whole new ball game.

Thanks for the advice Chuck.

Right now I have a more fundamental problem, though...
