Hi,
I'm starting to get deeper into soft samplers/synths. I'd like the samples to live on a separate drive. I have the OS on one drive; the audio and songs on another; and I'd like samples on this 3rd drive.

Now,  they (just a few inst) are on my C-drive. I don't mind reinstalling if need be, as I'm setting up a new system. I'm not sure if the inst and the  samples should both live on the "sample" drive or just the samples, and , if so, how do I separate the two. Perhaps, we could use Dimension Pro as an example and then I could do the same with the others.
Advice?

thanks in advance,

Kawika

Not all plug-ins that use samples stream them from disk. None of the synths bundled with Cakewalk stream samples. They load all their samples in memory when the program is loaded. The only benefits you receive by moving CW samples to another drive may be decrease in load times (it depends on the performance difference between the system drive and the new drive) and free up space on the system drive.

Yes...I'd like to keep the C-drive from getting overpopulated.

Another advantage of keeping samples on a separate drive is you can back up the drive easily to avoid losing your samples.

For Cakewalk synths, sample locations are stored in the registry. You can edit the registry and change the locations there or create directory junctions and leave the registry alone. I recommend doing the latter.

In Win10 it is still possible to use mklink by calling cmd.exe but Powershell is just as easy. Here are the steps to relocate the DPro samples from their default "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Multisamples" to "D:\Samples\Dimension Pro" using Powershell.
1) Open Powershell as adminstrator in "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro"
2) type
Move-Item -Path Multisamples -Destination 'D:\Samples\Dimension Pro'
New-Item -Type Junction -Path Multisamples -Value 'D:\Samples\Dimension Pro'

OK, thanks. And, in the future, I suppose I will keep a vigilant eye out for opportunities directing synths upon installation.
