• SONAR
  • X3 freezing because of MIDI routing? (p.5)

Swamptooth - i could not get it to work until I added Reaktor and Rapture both as simple instrument tracks.  I thought I would add Reaktor as a midi track and rapture as a simple instrument to get the midi to route through.  That did not work.  Simple instrument tracks worked like a charm.

@adf -
i tried this as well, but when i record on both i get the same midi notes on each track.

Swamptooth - I will play with that tonight.  I did not try to record midi, just played.

Also, with two instances of spiral I started getting big time mr. freezies.

I am thinking to name our issue -

Suggestions :

1) Spiral Hang 10
2) Enable Midi Out Freeze Occurrence (EMOFO).
3) Multiple Enable Midi Out Crash (MEMOC)
4) Annoying Reoccurring Sonar Event

Did not get around to checking out midi recording in Sonar with Spiral last night, but I did load up 5 instances of spiral triggering Rapture and Dimension pro and had Jamstix 3.5 providing a beat.

I had a whole spiral band automatically triggering weird art rock kind of stuff, and it never crashed.  One Spiral was playing guitar, an other playing organ, another playing bass, etc.  It was cosmically weird and kind of fun.  Ultimately pretty useless, but still a lot of fun.

Did I mention that this was in another DAW (the one that sounds like Creeper),  I guess that is an important detail that I should have brought up.

(BTW....the only reason I ever purchased that other DAW was to convince myself that I was not doing anything wrong or expecting too much from Sonar when this first started happening a couple years back)

Interesting that no one from Cake has replied to this yet....they seem to be busy replying and helping on lots of other threads.

There is another very cool sequencer for Reaktor (user library not factory) called NOD-E.  Kind of similar to spiral in some ways, but more like electronic wind chimes.

Put two of these in the same Sonar project and voila....  EMOFO  (Enable Midi Out Freeze Occurance)  ( I took the liberty since there were no votes and no other suggestions of picking my favorite)

So far we have Spiral, Catanya and NOD-E causing the same issue.  What are the odds that all these developers are making the same mistake.   really quite incredible.

This thread is great, I'm going to check out all of these ensembles.

I have been using Bidule to get around this long standing bug.

Cakewalk +1,000,000 please fix and get this sorted. This should be a requirement for all modern DAW's!

Arach - Downloaded automata will try it out in a  little while and report back.  (Hopefully X3c does something about this issue and we can remove X3 from this forum and talk about reaktor in the software forum)

Here is another experiment I did.  I put 6 instances of NOD-E in Sonar X3b.  These all come pre "wired" with steampipe synth (internal to Reaktor).  Made sure enable midi out is off in X3C synth rack.  All six played brilliantly.  Was able to change patches on the fly with NOD-E and Steampipe not a hiccup.  (midi triggering all internal to Reaktor, X3c not involved)

Then all I did was click enable midi out on the first two Reaktor tracks,  press play and ....CRASH...FREEZE....EMOFO.  I was was not even connecting anything external to Reaktor, all I did was enable midi out on two tracks.

Not that we need another smoking gun, but I found one anyway.

Okay I will shut up now....not getting fixed as fast I might want, but they know what it is and they have a plan to fix.....

From Noel :

Noel, do you consider the stability issues with having multiple VST with Midi Out a fundamental issue, and will it be addressed in X3c? The release notes for X3b said it had been fixed, but it's till broken...

Stability:
  • Resolved a crash when using direct MIDI output with multiple VST Instruments simultaneously, such as multiple instances of JamStix or Catanya (CWBRN-5781, CWBRN-2504, CWBRN-2564, CWBRN-1739)

I think your approach of looking to close down the fundamental issues before moving on to dev of X4 is a really positive step; with X3 addressing so many other user concerns straight out the gate, it seems this is really in reach.

The original crash was definitely addressed - I reproduced and fixed it myself and tested with Jamstix. This is another variant that was not in our system. It probably won't make it into X3C due to time constraints but we'll definitely do our best to address it for the next update since its an important fix. Sorry for the delay but there have been a several lot pressing issues to address before this one.

I tried my earlier project setup - 3 Spirals running 3 VSTs - in X3c.

It starts off working fine, but as I was trying to verify that the MIDI channels were proper, it hung up with no audio.

I tried a few more times and it will start up OK, but eventually, after a minute or two, the sound stops and the GUI freezes. I have to Kill Sonar in Taskmanager.

I found the same thing.   The crash is a little different, it actually plays a little longer maybe, but then crashes.  Sometimes I can even kill it in task manager too and do not have to restart PC.  I guess this is progress??

Also, X3c still does not generate a CWBRN message so one could send a log in.  I would love to send one a day if I could.

I also notice that the midi x-talk is still there too.   If I have enable midi out on more than one vsti, whenever I record midi I get everything all mixed up on top of one another.  Since I use Jamstix and Catanya in almost every project, this is really, really annoying and disheartening.
