  • TIP: Create a Favorites folder in the plugin browser

If you have a lot of plugins, you may find yourself frequently having to search for them in the browser. The new recently-used list in the 2017.07 release is a welcome addition, but it only tracks the last 5 plugins and those may not be the 5 you're looking for. An alternative is to create a plugin category called "-Favorites-" and put your most-used plugins there.

Start by right-clicking on one of your favorite plugins and clicking the "+" button to add it to a new category. Instead of choosing an existing category, type in "-Favorites-". That will create a new category called "-Favorites-". The leading "-" character in the name will place it at the top of the alphabetic listing, both in the browser and in the context menu.

Hi Dave ,
Say, that sounds like a very nice way to keep things organized and easy to find  .
I have been experimenting with your tip and I notice that it only seems to work when I access the plugins listed under the Sort By Category option in the Browser ..
When I try to right click a plugin that it is listed in another browser plugin category such as Sort by Manufacturer , Sort by Type or Platinum Effects , right clicking a plugin in the Browser  does not bring up the set category dialog box up.
Does this sound about right to you ? I certainly do like your tip , I'm just curious if I'm doing something wrong or if this option is only supposed to be available VIA the Sort by Category option in the Browser  .

all the best,

Kenny

It only works with "Sort by Category" because that is the only factory option that may be modified without resorting to a custom layout.

This tip works even if you normally insert effects via the FX bin context menu. Even better, actually, because the context menu is always alphabetical regardless of the browser sort order.

Truth is, I find the context menu more handy.  I only use the browser for finding rarely-used effects that I can't remember which category they're under, in which case sorting by manufacturer comes to the rescue.

I used the context menu almost exclusively too. I switch between the factory defaults and a custom layout I made based on "Sort by Category" because I can nest categories in the custom layout. The only time I use the browser for plug-ins is after added new plug-ins that do not follow my Categories.

It took me a while to get comfortable using the browser VS. using the FX bin/right click.
But its been a great change and a lot easier to manage.
