I made a video on how to get a bass sound using a guitar. Of course it's demonstrated in Sonar and everything I used is free. Although it's not a perfect bass sound IMO it is preferable to samples if you want realism in terms of slides, dynamics, timing, ect. I hope this helps some of you.

Interesting. What I've tried (thanks to Kenny Wilson for the tip) was to play the bass part on guitar, then insert a soft synth simple instrument track with a bass patch, drag the audio into it and let Melodyne convert the audio to MIDI.
 
...then I emailed Bapu to do me a bass track cos it sounded like ****

I've recorded a part on a telecaster audio track, dragged into a Dimension Pro track set to Wood (Double) Bass; dragged down an octave and added some slight bends. It was quite convincing.
