I think I'm going to keep the 16x08 for its preamps and use something else for the audio interface.  I'm just tired of messing with it.

As I said above, I've retired mine.  It's still in the rack so I can try any driver updates that may come along.  Without the glitches, the 16x08 is an awesome interface.

yes.  Either the Tascam and its associated software/firmware are bad, or Sonar is bad.  I'm going with the former.  Last night, notes were dropping, on both the MIDI hardware and the VST's.  Focusrite Scarlet18i20G2.  If I have problems with that, I'm just going to wear a knit cap and take up the banjo.

Dropped MIDI notes is often caused when the "Prepare Using nnn Millisecond Buffers" value is too low. If running the default 250 try using 500 or 750. Some have to use an even higher value. The setting is found in SONAR Preferences > MIDI > Playback and Recording.

I don't blame SONAR because the same problems exist in other DAWs.  I've verified this with both Studio One and Reaper.

Thanks for that trip.  I will try changing the buffer value.  The real issue (in my humble neophyte opinion) however, is that everything worked just fine yesterday.  Only half the stuff works today.  Sometimes nothing works at all.  There is no rhyme nor reason that I can isolate.  Sometime Rhapsody works and Drop Zone doesn't, or vice versa.  Sometimes I get pure digital static from the Cakewalk piano.  Tomorrow, who knows.  This thing is like a box of chocolates.  I don't think it's Sonar either.  It's too random.   Now I'm going to go mow the lawn and contemplate dropping 500 on another interface.  :/

Just a quick follow-up:  Swapped out the Tascam for a Focusrite Scarlett 18i 20.  All my myriad problems vanished.   All of them.  I don't want to bash Tascam, but the 16x08 is just not up to task for anything more than sitting on a desktop plugged into a laptop, imo.  The legs on that thing are way too pretty to keep in the box.

Peace out.

Excellent news, Carrie.

Maybe a solid set of firmware/drivers will become available for the 16x08 some day.  In the mean time, mine is still in the rack, but powered off - it's been replaced by a lowly UMC1820

I find it odd that the 16x08 which is the replacement for my us1641 and the us1800 is a turd. My us1641 has been working without issues on both W7 and W 10 since they put out the new driver in 2014.
Makes you wonder if the us1641 driver would work for the 16x08? the boxes are almost identical. Looking at them the only difference is mine has SPDIF and the new model just has the analog for 15/16. Also the blend ( computer/input) knob is now missing which I would also miss.
