  • Advance playhead by frames?

To anyone using SONAR to mix soundtracks...

Is there a way to advance the playhead/video one frame at a time? Sometimes lining up a sound effects requires frame-by-frame navigation and I'm not seeing a way to do that in SONAR.

I know I can set the nudge feature to move a clip frame by frame, but I'm referring to the actual playhead. So essentially I want to view the video and go forward/back one frame at a time.

Thanks.

You might be able to "Navigate"  using TAB key. Have you tried that already ?

Hi. Isn't it possible to set one of the "nudge" keys (in Preferences) to shift equivalent to a frame?
All the best.
Edit: I might have misread the question.

It seems to move me forward arbitrarily, not frame by frame. Good idea though, hadn't thought of the navigator.

Yeah, but nudge moves a particular clip by a pre-defined amount (say, one frame), but I want to move the playhead, not a clip. Like in Premiere Pro where you can move through the timeline frame by frame by hitting the arrow buttons. I was hoping to do something similar in SONAR.

I did something some years ago where I had to do this in an older version of Sonar, but I can't remember for the life of me how I did it. I seem to remember changing the timeline to display SMPTE time code so that I had frames and I was able to advance and **** by single frames. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but from memory, I was able to do this.

Use the "Event List"... highlite the audio clip or midi note you are trying to place.  Call up the Event List View and you will see columns with sympte time code and columns of beats/measure/ticks.  If you have highlited the event you want to move it will have a black mark next to it and be easy to find if you have many events on that particular track.  You can move event back and forth by frames or as small as ticks, have the video picture move,  by hitting "+ or -" on the numbers pad.

When I'm in a hurry, want to find a frame and have not yet recorded a midi event or dropped in an audio clip , I just enlarge the time line and click on the time line in small increments... it will be one frame at a time if you have enlarged it enough.

Hope that solves your issue.

I don't really score to movie much but this seems an odd omission indeed. Isn't there anything you could make a key binding of? I use CTRL+PGUP/PGDN a lot to move the playhead by a whole measure, or with SHIFT to jump between markers. Oh and FWIW, Tab isn't random, it's jumping to the next transient on the focused track.

You can turn on Aim Assist (type X), set the Snap to 1 Frame, and then the cursor will snap to single frame increments. Click to set the now time where the cursor snaps.

Yeah, I tried assigning PGUP/PGDN commands but I didn't find anything to bind them to.

I get that SONAR isn't a video editor and I wouldn't expect it to be. It's just that since they include a video import option, it must be expected that SONAR would be used to score/mix to picture. That being the case, frame-by-frame advancement is a pretty typical operation for this sort of thing.

And there does continue to be some confusion about what I'm asking. I'm not trying to move a clip or an event one frame at a time, because I can use the Nudge function for that. I'm trying to move the playhead, thereby moving the Now Time one frame at a time.
