I am looking for guidance on the best way to transfer a project from Sonar Home Studio (field laptop) to Sonar x 3 (studio Machine)?

As long as you're using per-project folders, which is done by default now in the latest versions of SONAR, then all project files are saved in a single folder. You can just copy that folder on to a USB drive and transfer it to the other PC.

Backwards compatibility
SONAR Artist/Home Studio/Steam Edition/Professional/Platinum can load projects from any previous versions of SONAR, but projects that are saved in SONAR Artist/Home Studio/Steam Edition/Professional/Platinum cannot be re-opened in SONAR 1.x or SONAR 2.x. In case you need to open a pre-SONAR Artist/Home Studio/Steam Edition/Professional/Platinum project in an earlier version of SONAR, it is recommended that you always create a backup copy of the original project before you re-save the project in SONAR Artist/Steam Edition/Professional/Platinum.

Not sure about X3.
