Improved Project Handling

Artist, Professional, and Platinum

Never wonder again where your files went when you’re in the heat of creativity. As soon as you decide to save a new project, SONAR will create a folder automatically with the appropriate name, and place the project audio and Mix Scenes in it—there’s no need to create a folder beforehand. And, if you later “Save As” or “Save As Copy” in the same location as the current project, SONAR will know this is the original location and not create additional folders—but if you save to a different location, SONAR will intelligently place the project and associated files in a new folder. Now you can spend more time making music—and less time thinking about where to store it.

All right, didn’t read this post through and wondered what’s the problem...

My way of working includes saving multiple versions of projects in case something breaks or I just want to go back to an earlier version: something like SongName_version1.cwp, SongName_version2.cwp and so on. More than occasionally, I have an existing folder with files from some other software where I want to save these multiple versions. Now 2017.06 wants to save the SongName_version1.cwp file to a subfolder named SongName/SongName_version1 and doesn’t let me change the folder name or use the upper level folder. Of course, I can cut/paste the files to the upper level folder or rename this new folder, but it’s a slightly annoying extra step to do.

So my question is: Is there a way to turn this Improved Project Handling feature off?

I just updated to Update 1   23.6.0.24. I didn't understand why it stated "Update 1" since this is supposed to be Update 2 according to the thread title, but it did show .24 so I assumed this is build 24 and the only update available in Command Center.

At any rate, I opened one of my existing projects and tried a "save as" and it worked just is has been. I also started a new project and used "save as" and it let me create a folder with an arbitrary name, and let me save the file as normally done.

So it's working fine for me.

Hello, does this new upgrade include the 32 bit version of the software? I have a few projects that I made in 32bit Sonar! There's a problem when I load them into the 64 bit version. Obviously these two versions are different!

FWIW, if you're using Save As for revisions, try the Save Copy tool in the Control Bar - it performs the same Save As function but without automatically switching the active project to that Save As version.  So you can keep updating the primary project while creating those revisions along the way.

Same glitch here : Update SONAR Platinum 64 bits (French version).
From CCC, and Application, it shows : 2017.06 Update 1 (Build 24)

Save As .. might be defective in 2017.6. I tried to save a copy under another name in the same directory as the primary project, and SONAR put it into a sub-directory with the name of the new project name I'd entered.

Edit:
Darn, I can't reproduce it. It might have been my fault. I'll pay close attention next time.

With this new update there are a couple changes to the saving of projects, If you do a new Save As and navigate to a new location (Not Current Project Location) We will automatically put the Project into a folder so that new audio added to the project goes into the project folder. This can still be customized to what ever you like in the bottom section of the dialog.

If you are doing a new Save As into the existing project folder we recognize this to be the Same folder and only save an additional project without creating a sub folder.

Also, When using the Ctrl+N shortcut to create a project the first save will prompt to give it a name and will also self organize the project into a folder at the location you choose. This makes moving a project to a different location much more reliable that everything gets moved. Any newly imported audio or recorded will then get stored in the correct place along with Mix Recall saves and Melodyne Transfer files.

just a quick observation. When in touchscreen mode if the control bar is collapsed, you cannot access any of the modules unless you use a mouse. When you do use a mouse, the modules drop down but not if you use touch. Is this not an issue? Or am I missing something?

Lance, that describes the situation I encountered, except that even after customizing the location, Sonar went ahead and created an extra subfolder under that. Seeing as I can't reproduce this, I'm going to chalk it up to user error and pay close attention next time.
Thanks for explaining the change in more detail.
