We don't know what your set up is so how can we say!

Since the question is in Sonar board, I guess the question is about Sonar related options

So... TouchDAW, Lemur, TouchOSC and other MIDI/OSC apps can remotely control Sonar.

I bought a Focusrite iTrack Dock (and Roland UM-ONE mk2 USB MIDI Interface) so I can play instrument apps on my iPad using my Axiom midi controller - and via midi sent from Sonar - with the audio from the iPad sent to Sonar.
Best advice I can offer is to research what you want to do with the iPad before laying out any cash for stuff.
I have a cables, an iPad line-out audio interface, midi keyboards and the like sat doing nothing as they weren't the best option (the iTrack Dock wasn't the best option as I had to buy the Roland UM-ONE to get the midi I wanted, but it's a reasonably elegant solution).

ik multimedia has very pro instruments and effect stuff you should look into.
i used sounds from my ipad played through a 'lightning to USB camera adapter" aprox $35 to 55 bucks.

ielectric and igrand are very very good.

ADDED: my biggest problem was battery life. If i played a four hour gig, and forgot to plug in my ipad during my breaks..i was in heavy trouble....the camera adapter has two inputs....a lighting and a usb so you can charge in one midi in the other. in my view...much better option than others.
any questions just fire away....glad to help

I am using StudioMux (iPad app which is on offer at the moment). It can transfer MIDI and Audio over a standard USB connection (the charging cable that comes with your iPad). The Windows driver for example allows iPad apps to be used as if they were VSTi's within Sonar. Some of the iPad instruments are amazing and cheap compared to typical PC based instruments (Geoshred and Thumbjam to name but two).

Here are some app that I use with my ipad, all are really good for the music 😁😁😁

- AUM - Audio Mixer: The best app to connect together several musical apps within the same device. Is replacing AudioBus (not present on my screens dump).
- Moog Model 15: The best modular on IOS (not on my screens dump).
- ROTOR: The app that replaces Reactable. Possibility to put "real" dedicated objects (on sale in a few months) on the iPad and thus use it as a true Reactable.
- ARP ODYSSEi: The new fashionable ****.
- FieldScaper: To make drones from samples.
- Patterning: A funny approach to beat making.
- Korg Gadget: An integrated environment that gradually takes on IOS the place that Reason took on computer.
- iMPC Pro: Very pro.
- iKaossilator: Very playful.
- Borderlands: Granular synthesis with a very original interface. You have to look on Youtube (looking for "borderlands") videos of a guy who does amazing stuff just with this app.
- Audulus: The most complete digital modular on IOS. A monster to use on an iPad Pro to enjoy the big screen.
- iVCS3: A whole era. Interface very confusing (the matrix, etc ...) but a very marked sonic identity.
- Arturia iSEM: The Oberheim sound on IOS.
- SpringSound: confusing interface, but the most powerful app based on physical modeling synthesis.
- TC-11: A drone machine with very digital sounds. Very "arti" interface with taking into account the gyroscopic sensors of the devices.
- iMS-20: Very complicated access but the sound of the MS20.
- iPolysix: Easier than the iMS-20 and a funny "vintage" arpeggiator / sequencer.
- iMini: The indispensable MiniMoog on IOS.
- iM1: The replica of the M1, with all M1 and T1 / 2/3 series sound cards purchased separately. A sort of 80/90 sonority museum.
- Vogel CMI: app with certain functions very badly damaged, to see obsolete, but it is a emulation of Fairlight CMI with all the samples of the original disks of the mark. A "historical" app.
- Audiobus: The well-known inter-audio protocol.
- Animoog: A classic. A sound a bit cold I find, but the "oscilloscope" interface has become a must for any IOS-musician.
- Arturia iProphet: A very convincing Prophet VS.
- Cyclop: A kind of "woobles" machine with fun and playful functions.
- Crystalline: A FX of type "shimmer" that I adore.
- Tera Synth: A semi modular enabled the best music app. The sound is very good.
- Fugue Machine: Between the arpeggiator and the sequencer. Something really nice to do melody loops.
- Thor: In the absence of Reason, the Propellerhead synth on IOS. But what do they do at Propellerhead for not yet wearing Reason?
- Nanologist: A mini synth with a huge sound.
- Auria: The DAW audio / midi reference on IOS. It is complicated to do without a computer for prod, but this app can play the role of central app for a pure IOS-musician. I have already used this app on stage to do the backtracking behind the live instruments and it works.
- Dedalus: A sample mangler super good for drones darks.
- Samplr: One of the best sample manipulation tools for live.
- ToneStack: An all-in-one FX that competes with Amplitude. I find that ToneStack sounds better using "electronic music". A history of taste.
- Loopy HD: A looper.
- Koushion: A sequencer pattern with a very effective flat design interface.
- Wave / Launchpad blocks: The two Novation / Ableton headlight apps to link the grooves / loop. A little Novation / Ableton's response to the Native Instruments Machines.
- Jasuto: A very old app with an incomprehensible design, but hides a powerful modular synth. The sound is excellent.
- Thumbjam: To jam on ready made ranges with samples rather above the lot on IOS. One of the first IOS app to have the MPE extension to MIDI.
- TNR-i: The emulation of Tenori-On. I never understood anything on the menu, but for having seen Emilie Simon several times using a live Tenori, we can get out of the beautiful thing of this app.
- Chordbot: (special case). It is not an instrument but a chord note pad. Super ugly interface and super ugly sounds. The interest of this app is to be able to work on harmonic suites (grids).
There are many others and I have forgotten some essential apps, but that's what happens to me by scrolling quickly in my iPad.
