Hi I currently have win10, sonar, and everything all on a HD.  I'm getting some performance issues and other than increasing my RAM which i'm also going to do, i want to move sonar and all project files to the SSD for faster R/W.

Do I need to completely uninstall sonar and all my plugins and start over essentially?  Or can I just move everything to the new SSD? etc?

I'm using sonar platinum

Anyone have experience doing this?

I don't think you have any choice but to uninstall and reinstall to the SSD. You will need to setup Command Center with the new install location. VST plugins - some can be moved to the new location, others won't work if you manually move them. So maybe move them all and go through trying them out and reinstall the ones that fail. Other than that it should just be a matter of reconfiguring Sonar.

Clone the C drive..  I did it in May.  Went well.  Macreon I think is what I used.  Free.  Upgrade your ram first, see if that goes well.  You will or may have some issues with some plugins wanting reregistration...depends what you have.  Anything that took a machine key probably.  Lot's of posts from that time period.  See if you can find them.

Make sure that if you go the clone route (which I also recommend), you disable any scheduled defragmentation tasks that you may have in place.  Or al least configure any defragmentation tools to use TRIM

If you replace a second drive towards SSD you can simply (if added towards an exsisting system and the second drive stays) add an SSD and change the path towards storage. That way Sonar can stay.

If you go from a C:\ HDD to a SSD. If the size does not change you can clone the exsisting drive. Take it out and replace with the SSD. And voila. Usually the more expensive SSD's come with a piece of software wich does that for you.

It depends on what your goals is.
Are you going to keep the HD and just install an SSD side by side ?
or are you removing the HD and replacing it with a new SSD ?

If its the later, copy all the installers from Command center and paste them back in when you install the new SSD. This will avoid having to re download everything all over again.

Because Sonar is now on your main hard drive than yes, you want to uninstall it and personally, I would wipe the drive clean/reformat but make sure to back up everything first (projects, files, exc).

why not just move your projects [CWP]  to the new drive & keep your program  files on the old drive..

just an idea..

Windows boots 10X times faster when its on an SSD VS. an HDD.
Programs open faster, there is a large difference in speed.

I have to say though, you are right and its a good idea (less work).
To really take advantage of an SSD though you want to have it as your main OS and put your projects, samples, exc some where else (on an HDD) I however choose to put my CWP on my SSD because they (In my opinion) stream audio faster. I use 80% Audio in my projects and the SSD is fast.

A small SSD can be bought now pretty cheap (60-80 bucks) and it is the first quick/easy upgrade (next to RAM) that suggest.
Happy music making
