  • Any way to create presets for the Synth rack ala Ableton Live racks?

In Abletone Live I can open say Kontakt, pick an instrument, and then save as a Rack. So I could have dozens of racks based on VST like Kontakt, Massive, etc.

In Sonar I can create custom menus for VSTs but just one instance of a VST. I would like to create a menu with all of my instruments as presets, so I can quickly add say Output Signal, which would load Kontakt and Signal as the Kontakt instrument.

Is this possible?

If not, I might use Track Templates to get around this and create a track template for each instrument...

Before reading the last line of your post I was going to suggest track templates but you beat me to it. Track and project templates are your only options ATM.

Of course the templates could be as simple as an instrument track and the synth or a multi-track monster. How you enhance that template in a project is up to you.

Thanks scook!

Synth rack would be better, but this will get the job done thanks!

Just got to thinking - saving custom fx chains that have the instruments might be a better solution that track templates, unless the VST had multiple outs.

I'll play with it...

I'd be curious to know what prompted this query. Maybe because you've been Live-ing in an alternate universe for too long and now finding normal gravity to be disorienting?

I'd much rather save a track template than a synth rack, for the simple reason that it means far less effort. Your next step is always going to be to route those synths somewhere, and the track template handles that for you. Not to mention automation (e.g. CC11 on every orchestral MIDI track, CC7 on every audio track) plus bus sends. Nowadays, I can simplify it all even more by including an aux track in the template so that my reverb (or whatever) automagically appears in there, too.

Plus, I can't think of any two projects I've ever done that used exactly the same instruments.

Nothing is out of the question! :)

Actually, I just realized the browser makes it easy to save them in a folder structure and drag them out as necessary.

Bit, I am a changed man. I will use track templates.

You don't have to make a separate track template for each instrument, you know. You can save any combination of tracks (with their synths) into a track template.
