Right in the middle of cutting a vocal track, the computer crashed.
When I rebooted, the first thing I see is that Gobbler wants me to log in.
All I can guess, and it's just a guess, is that Gobbler tried to access the internet in the middle of recording, with no prompting from me, and crashed the computer.
 
Why would that cause the waveforms of the track I was working on, as well as a half dozen similar tracks which had already been saved to disk  to lose visual waveforms and turn into straight pencil lines?
 
How can I get the waveforms back?
 
How can I make sure this NEVER happens again?

I think I got an error message that stated that my disk was full but it has 451 GB to go to be full.

There are a couple of ways to redraw the wave images but if you have never cleared the SONAR picture cache, mow may be a good time. The path the the cache is in Preferences > File > Audio Data. Open the picture cache folder and delete everything in it.
 
WRT Gobbler, if this the client that shipped with X3, I though Gobbler stopped using it some time ago. If that is the case, uninstall it.

I didn't know whether Gobbler was req'd to make the plugins work (I'm not a computer guy). It was the only way to upload the Slate Everything bundle, but as long as the plugins show up and work w/o it I'll just uninstall it and reinstall it if I need it to upload add'l plugs. I've had projects crash or just not load because something, whether it was Ilok, Gobbler, the previous client thingy or the plugin itself wouldn't let me work on my project without being able to tell for certain that the plugin could be authenticated/ wasn't cracked. Which party is locking down Sonar is pretty opaque to me.
 
I perfectly understand the purpose of DRM. Naturally with rampant piracy a lot of software developers are fighing for their livelihoods. But it is bitterly ironic that if we in the music business tried anything like that, we would be burned at the ****ing stake. And they'd rip off our content anyway. [/rant]
 
I just started using visual icons in console view yesterday, maybe that pushed the picture cache over the edge? Anyway, I'll clear the picture cache (never have).
 
Any way of redrawing waveforms you could recommend? They are helpful to see for edits and overdubs, crossfades...  ;-)

That is a different application than the Gobbler cient that came bundled with SONAR. I am not sure uninstalling is an option for you. Not having any manufacturers that require Gobbler, I have avoided installing the new client and will have to leave it to someone that has experience with it.

If you delete the contents of the picture cache the audio clip images will be redrawn as needed. The picture cache is used for drawing images of audio clips only. Images used for icons do not affect the picture cache.

I was unable to open the folder from there -- the option was not available for whatever reason.
 
I went to Drive C; Cakewalk Projects; Picture cache folder.
 
"Are you sure you want to send these 13,837 files to the recycling bin?"
 
You bet.

The cache is not accessible from the Preference screen. It is necessary to open the folder in Windows to delete the contents. Now you know how to do it.

The waveforms have reappeared.
I have all my Cakewalk apps and all plugins on Drive C and projects on a couple of external drives.
 
The error message about maxing out the disk was probably correct -- I was looking at the external disk the project was on which had 451 GB of free space.
 
Drive C, which held the picture cache only has 52.5 GB of free space now after emptying the picture cache.
 
And when I said 13,837 files, that was a joke. But it was also the actual number of files.

The size of the picture cache is set by PicCacheMB in Aud.Ini. The default is 20MB. You can read about it here. The value may be changed in Preferences > Audio > Configuration File. This is an advanced setting. To see the option, make sure the Advanced radio button is selected at the bottom of the Preferences dialog.
