I've finally come up against the dreaded CPU wall.  I'm getting dropouts and Cubase's CPU usage meter spikes each time I experience a dropout.  If I set Cubase's ASIO Guard to high the dropouts stop but I get unacceptable latency.  So... a new CPU/MB are not in the budget so it's time to overclock.
 
Does anyone know the correct/best BIOS settings?  Do I need special cooling?  If so, what's the most cost effective cooling?
I have a i72600K on a Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 motherboard.  Any help much appreciated!

Freeze tracks. It's free and solves most CPU overload problems. In the old days (a few years ago as I recall) you did this for more than a few tracks. Do you really need to live-niggle dozens of tracks at once?  Learn the old ways.
 
btw Your system is pretty powerful already. You might try looking for other issues, and describing what your project looks like.

I do a lot of MIDI/VSTi and up until recently I've been getting by.  Even my empty template hits the wall before I have any tracks in it so I've decided to overclock.  It should be quite simple with the i72600K but I don't remember all the parameters.

Depending on you MB and BIOS, there is often a "CPU Tweaker" section (advanced mode). In the basic mode for BIOS there is often a set configuration of "Energy Efficient, Normal, and High Performance" which are three set values. However, I will say that without some extreme cooling, the CPU will begin to throw faults (verify this with LatencyMon if you go this route). The overall throughput was actually slower using any level of "extreme" overclocking for me. The effective CPU throughput is shown in LatencyMon (or you can benchmark it using PassMarks Benchmark program). I have always used a normal mode, but overclocked RAM appropriately, and the only software that will peg the CPU is video rendering and encryption-based software.
 
Overall, David's comment above is the recommended route (finding/freezing offenders). I have never had issues with CPU limits, but also tend to be light-handed with VST/VSTis as well. If you have not checked the system, LatencyMon is a good start, as you may have other programs in the background affecting you.
 
Quick Edit: If using project templates to "cover everything" you may want to choose a more tactical approach with track templates for project construction.

There is a Tweaker section and and I set it for high performance.  WOW! HUGE CHANGE!  My templates barely go over 1/2 in the Cubase CPU meter now.   That was the easiest fix ever.  I thought my BIOS was already set for high performance but apparently not.  I have no need to overclock now.  Thanks to all who offered help.

I too have the same chip, and I have NEVER come close to running out of CPU.  I DID do the disable of core parking and some other things, buy deliberately did NOT overclock the CPU, because it adds a bunch of extra heat and makes everything wear out faster.

These are still great CPUs and you have to evaluate upgrading a CPU which means new board and RAM.
