Hi all, does SONAR (Platinum in this case) have a Chord identification option?
I’m no pianist, but I am trying progress into more elaborate chord progressions than using simple triads, such as 7ths and 9ths and it would be really handy to have a real time visual identification of what I'm playing.

I agree, I've mentioned it several times here on the forums how nice it would be to have such a tool at our disposal.
However, if your know how to read music (which by your comment it seems you know theory) than it is pretty easy to digest what makes what chords. (9th, M3rds, exc).

Sonar has the Chord Midi Plugin for that purpose.

Back in my teenage years I played Bass Guitar and could get by reading sheet music in the Bass Clef.  I would say I have a basic understanding of chords, but really want to improve on my knowledge.  I suppose the chord identification option would be "a nice option to have" when experimenting as you can then quickly make a note.

I thought I read somewhere that the AAS Strum Session (included in platinum) would read midi notes and give you the chordal interpretation.

I've never used the program for more than 30 seconds, so I can't confirm.

I've never gotten good results out of the Cakewalk Chord Analyzer plugin.  I'm not exactly sure what it is doing most of the time.

If you want to know what chords are in a MIDI track (or that you are playing), try Insert Piz Here's midiChordAnalyzer
http://www.thepiz.org/plugins/?p=midiChordAnalyzer

It's an instrument.  Put your MIDI on it's input track (or your keyboard) it shows what the chord is.

You can then feed it's MIDI out to a real synth to hear it, just turn echo on it and the real synth.

Yes, it will give you a readout of the chord name (e.g., Fmaj7). However, it displays the fingerings on a guitar neck, not a standard keyboard.

As snaut2000 said, Sonar's built-in MIDI plugin "Chord Analyzer" does exactly this. I just recently found it. :) It shows the chords in realtime on a piano graphic as well as a guitar neck (I'm no guitarist, but I think it is one!).

I wish for 2 things for the Sonar Chord Analyzer:
  • An option to show chords with flats instead (seems like Piz Here's midiChordAnalyzer can do that - thanks for the tip msorrels!)
  • To integrate it into the Control Bar as a module. It is done like that in Logic, it's really cool. That way, it could be permanently visible, but take almost no screen estate.
