  • Speaking of Take Lanes... (p.2)

Put me in the "dumb" category with take lanes.  I've watched videos on how to do it and still completely lost.  I just make a new "audio" track and record on that instead of take lanes.  I can cut and paste parts if needed.

I can do a lot in Sonar, but I hit a blank with take lanes.

This may not be the most elegant method, but in order to keep takes organized I create a new blank Take Lane and put it at the top of the Take Lanes for that track.  Next, I split the clips in each take lane at logical points.  As I go through and listen to the clips, I move the ones I deem the best to that top Take Lane.

I use this same method except I don't move the chosen clips to another take lane.  I change the clip background color, (in my case, a bright yellow).  Now I can maneuver through the track and even if I accidentally mute or unmute a clip I can always find the clip I initially chose.  I can also easily select and highlight an additional clip and make the final decision later.

When I'm ready, I just delete the muted clips and I'm good to go.

Thanks for posting this. Again, I find something that shows me "I don't know, what I don't know" :) I use takes for comping and just mute and unmute to promote to track. Sometimes I find one I like but when I move on I sometimes can't find the one I previously liked, if I change its color, that will make it easier to find, not to mention I could "color code" to set priority i.e. green=really like, yellow= workable etc. etc.
Thanks again for a great idea.

(Why didn't I think of this myself)

I hope I've understood where you guys are at, but here's my input:

If you are using take lanes, the Smart tool will change the cursor to what looks like a honey scoop when moved to the bottom half of a clip.

Clicking here will select the clip and mute all the others in that stack of clips.
The clip will also appear in the main track at the top.

Once you have the selection of clips you like, you have some choices.
1. Flatten the comp (right click and select Flatten comp) or...
2. Close the take lanes and copy (Ctrl+drag 'n' drop) the track into a fresh, empty track.

Thanks everyone!
I guess there's several ways to go about take lanes (as is everything with Sonar).
I also like the color coding idea. Simple genius.
