Ok, so hell has officially frozen over for us Reason users. VST support is coming!

But that leaves me with a question: How (if at all) my Sonar/Reason workflow will change given this new feature.
 
I've heard everything from now you can use only 1 DAW (immediate reaction mostly from Reason users). ...but hell I like Sonar ...and I'm invested in learning it deeply. I've also been a Reason user since Reason 2. I use it with Sonar pretty effectively with (mostly) no complaints. But Reason with VST support? ...what does it all mean?
 
I would like to hear thoughts from current Sonar/Reason users as to how (if at all) this will change your workflow.

I have the beta and wasn't enamoured at first but it did grow on me after a while. The disadvantage of being a Sonar user is a lot of what Reason scans is unusable outside of Sonar (Sonar has a lot of plug-ins!). If you are used to using the bundled software then Reason is going to frustrate you.
The recording of plug-in automation is much better in Reason than Sonar but Sonar's smart tools are better when editing in the sequencer.
Midi learn is a good in Reason (ACT is a pain in the bum in Sonar).
Reason has combinators (yay).
I found multiple plug-in outputs easier in Sonar.
The plug-in lists in Reason are pretty clear where the new plug-in manager in Sonar has a slight suckiness.

Obviously all of the above is my personal opinion and as Reason is in beta everything is subject to change.
I feel a bias towards Sonar as a plug-in host due to years of using it as such. If I was starting out I'd pretty interested in Reason as a host.

Yeah, that kinda sucks that Sonars' plugins are only available in Sonar. I mean I "get it" -intellectual property and all- but it would be nice to use some of their plugins in other software. That would add significant value to my purchase.

Really?!? That kinda sounds like you're saying you'd go with Reason over Sonar ...if... you were starting out. Interesting.

AFAIK, of the VST plug-ins bundled with SONAR only third party plug-ins are locked to SONAR. The Cakewalk VST plug-ins may be used in any VST host. Some of the third party plug-ins are not locked too, such as Addictive Drums and Melodyne. I believe it is more an issue of cost than IP. Providing full retail versions of third party plug-ins costs more.

Oh Wow! Since I've only ever used Sonar as a VST host, I never had the opportunity to test. But that comes as great news! Counting down to May 29th 2017 for Reason w/VST! Will test then. Maybe a Reason Beta Tester can attest to CW VST's in Reason.

Yup, there are some Cakewalk plugins licensed for use only in Sonar.  For example Blue Tubes FX, True Pianos, AAS Cakewalk Session products, Overloud Breverb and TH3, etc.  But there are some that will work fine in other DAWs.
 
These will work, for example: Boost11, Channel Tools, Dimension Pro, LP-EQ, LP-MB, PX-64, Rapture Session, Studio Instruments, Session Drummer, TL-64, TS-64, VX-64, Cakewalk Sound Center, Tone2 BiFilter2, Celemony Essential, Addictive Drums, etc.

I have Sonar and Reason. I bought them at the same time. At that time it was Sonar 7 and Reason 4. I always found Reason easier to use from day one but I needed Sonar for the VST support. I use to create projects in Reason and use Sonar to finish them off. The mixer in Sonar is better but the Redrum in Reason is just excellent at programming drums. As I always start songs with the Drums my workflow just fell into place. It will be interesting to see how things are in Reason 9.5 with VST support. Now technically I should be able to finish off my songs in Reason now. Ozone on the master channel which you could never do before. That will be weird but exciting. This is going to make Reason a lot more popular and even bring old users back. I hope Sonar can pull a few tricks out of its own bag this year too. I would like to see some sort of chord tool like Chord Track like Cubase has and personally I would like a more user friendly drum programmer like the Redrum in Reason. I don't think I will get that second wish but the first one would be popular.

The mixer in Sonar is better but the Redrum in Reason is just excellent at programming drums.

 
I think that SSL based mixer in Reason is a great! A beast! 
 
On workflow, I guess I will just have to wait and test. One thing is for sure, VST in reason could be a game changer.

One of the things I like about Sonar is I don't ever have to open the console view. Is that style work flow possible in Reason?

 I'd love to see some of the things in Reason as a VST.  I can't see people dropping their current DAWs in favor of Reason.  I'd love Redrum as a VST.  Too bad Cakewalk ditched Beatscape.  Dr Octo Rex would be a handy VST.
 
I'm not very familiar using Reason, despite VST support I will probably learn it old school.
