Old Cakewalk Pro user here.  I have a bunch of old .WRK files that I'd like to convert to MIDI.
 
I've googled it, and as nearly as I can tell, there's no way to do it without buying a full version of Sonar.  I've since switched my DAW setup.
 
Can someone kindly convert a few files for me?  I'm talking less than a dozen files.

Hi, Welcome to the forums.
I believe you can install the demo version and simply drag the midi file to the browser (or to windows explorer)
Is it one project with all the midi files inside that 1 project ?
Or is it a dozen projects ?

My google research said the demo version won't save or export .WRK files to .MID; does the drag & drop get around that?
 
As for projects, I'm not sure.  These files are >15 years old.  I'm not completely sure CW used "projects" back then. As far as I can recall, one .WRK file would comprise one .MID file.
 
 

I just downloaded the Sonar Demo, and it doesn't save or export.  But I opened the old .WRK files, and I can confirm that each .WRK file would result in just one .MID file, I'm pretty sure.
 
And yes, I tried the DOS conversion program; I couldn't get it to work either.  I think the files are from a version of CW it doesn't recognize.

If someone can do this for me, I'd be glad to Paypal you $20 or something.  It shouldn't take more than a couple minutes.

You are correct, the demo will not allow you to save of export mixes. but I thought for sure it will allow you to drag and drop midi tracks to windows explorer or even the browser within sonar.

Sorry, let's pretend I'm an idiot:  How do I "drag and drop the MIDI file"?  I'm looking at the default Multidock interface after opening a .WRK file and I can't figure out how to drag a MIDI file anywhere.

Look at the Track View and your midi files should be on a track. Is that the case?
 
If so, just click, hold and drag midi info from the track to the Browser on the right.
 

Use the monthly payment plan to get the fully functional version of Artist for $10 a month. Open each wrk and then use the File > Save As function to create a MIDI file containing all the MIDI data in the wrk file. If you decide to stop making payments before completing the purchase in 12 months, the version will revert to the demo. If the wrk contains a single MIDI clip, dragging the clip from the track view to the desktop or a Windows folder creates a MIDI file from the clip.

OK, I see now. But if you try to drag anything outside the Sonar interface, a window pops up that says something like "Demo version - Export disabled".
