An output matrix question, multiple sound systems.
Here is the PA:
2 QSC K12
2 QSC subwoofers
2 Bose L1 towers running off a Crown amp.
2 JBL 615 Eon's (Floor Monitors)
Basic question: Better to chain all the XLR's out of 15/16 (Main Out) or,
major benefits to assign each stereo pair to bus pairs and do this matrix thing?
I used to tune em all with their respective gains, and it was simple because they always came up the way I expected. It looks like the output matrix capabilities of the X32 are really cool, but not much experience yet with it. It would be wonderful to have the control surface for Sonar be able to manipulate these, but since the output stage is so critical in a gig, I wondered if it was bulletproof (or as bulletproof as I guess you can get with automated equipment!)
Thanks!
For live - the ipad app is indespensable! Its really been very helpful for me, whether mixing from stage or walking through a sanctuary to satelite speakers.
It depends on your room for sure. I am guessing the the l1 bose system is not in the same position as the k12s and subs? Even if they are they have a VERY different q and dynamic response - so any choices you make for the qsc tops, you dont want to effect the l1s etc. If thats the case then you would definitely give them their own matrix output, or output(s) if its stereo. Its really easy to go into the routing page and do it. I work backwards from 16 for front of house, and upwards from 1 for monitors.
With the QSC stuff I prefer to run aux fed subs into a buss, and then its own output, so I don't rely on the crossover in the boxes. This also allows you to independently tune your subs as well. The QSC subs themselves have a normal and a deep position, and I feel the deep one sounds much better and moves the "center" of the box into the 60 hz range instead of, maybe 90? However in the tops theres a vocal boost and also a deep switch, I never use these as they tend to make your mix sound far away... however work ok for background music if your a dj. Theres also an external sub switch which is essentially a high pass, I turn that off too. That way all of my eq comes from 1 place.
Stereo Pairs? Not totally sure what your asking about?
Heres what I might do with your live rig, which Ive used something very similar:
Drums - (subgroup send )buss 1-2 - Comp - (DCA 1) - LR
Bass - LR
GTRS - (Subgroup send) Buss 3-4 - Comp (DCA 2) - LR
Keys - (DCA 3) LR
Bvox - (Subgroup Send) Buss 5-6 - Comp (DCA 3) - LR
Lead Vocal - LR
Kick - Toms - Bass - Keys -> Buss 9 - Sub - (DCA 4) - LR
Outputs -
15 16 LR -> Main Tops
13-14 -> L R Satellite (Matrix 1 2 - LR mix)
12 - Sub woofer
1- Eon mon 1
2- Eon mon 2
Just my thoughts
Have a great gig!
