I've found (supposedly) all the places Kontakt's .dll is installed and renamed Kont16.dll Kont8.dll and left the stereo as Kontakt 5.dll
HOWEVER after rescaning everything, both checkoxes checked, AND restarting both Sonar Plat AND windows 10...
All i see for inserting a synth are  Kontakt 5
                                                Kontakt 5
                                                Kontakt 5

What the duece?

Win10 pro build 14393
Lenovo i5-2400 3.1Ghz 4core

Thanks for the reminder that I've been meaning to rename my Kontakt versions too. In the Browser, clicking on the Plug-ins button opens a drop down with one option being "Manage layouts." This is also an available from the synth rack drop down menu when pressing on the "+" button. Either pathway opens the Plug-in Manager.

Selecting VST Instruments in the first list window allows display of the Kontakt 5 instances in the second window. Mine were also all named "Kontakt 5." Clicking on one instance in the list window selects it. Then look lower down at the "VST Configuration" section and click on the "Plug-in Properties" button.

From the properties window, click on the "Details" button to see specifics. One of my instances has 64 outputs, for example, while another has 16. Trying to rename within the details window does not work. Close the details window. Now in the Plug-in Properties window, type in the number of outputs in the name box. On exiting the box, the Plug-in Manager refreshes the list and now shows the new name. Repeat for the other instances. Now the new names persist in the Plug-in Manager lists. But I found they were not yet displaying in the "add synth" tool. Closing and reopening Sonar fixed that. Perhaps refreshing the VST scan might have done the same. But after restarting Sonar, I now can see different names for each version of Kontakt. I've seen other threads about the difficulty of the different versions of Kontakt showing up with identical names as the default, so we are not alone.

Hope that works for you.

Make sure the "Rescan Failed Plug-ins" and "Rescan Existing Plug-ins" are NOT checked in Preferences > File > VST settings. These options are intended for temporary use when repairing the VST Inventory.

Hi. You have to do this in SONAR's Plugin Manager.
All the best.

You can rename & categorize them in the browser.

You can identify them in the bottom of the browser, just click and drag to expand, to see what version it is.

Renaming in the browser (unlike the plugin manager) will survive plugin updates.  Kontakt would always lose the output specific names if you used the plugin manager to set the name when a new version was released or if you did a full re-scan.  The browser naming is stored in a seperate database and isn't effected by scanning/updating.

In order to be able to set the name in the browser you need to make sure you switch to "Sort By Category" mode, you can't change the name in manufacturer or type mode.  Then right click the one you want to rename, click the name field and give it a new name.  Use the status bar at the bottom of the plugin browser to know which version (number of outputs) of Kontakt you are renaming.

In SPlat the highlighted text does not show, so there's no visible way to know anything happened when you add a line here. You have to find Cakewalk.ini and open it to see if the line was inserted.

AFAIK, this screen works the same as it did in the X series. Initially nothing is displayed in the Selection box above the Option entry because this section of the Cakewalk.ini is empty by default. The Selection box changes when values are added to the entry fields and Set is clicked or a selection is made Delete is clicked.
