I'm using a 44VSL and had similar issues when I first started using it. Here are the steps I took that resolved most issues:
1) In BIOS, turn off core parking and/or any CPU throttling power saver settings.
2) Completely disable USB3 support in the BIOS. Make sure the USB port the Audiobox is plugged into is pure USB2. You may need to download a utility to help you map the USB ports in your system.
3) Believe it or not, record @ 96/24 rather than 44.1/24. The Audiobox handles that very well. On my system, I can handle much larger projects @ 96 than at 44, though you'll have to render/freeze heavier plugins as the project grows.
Good luck!
